MB Thinking about a convertible...

Hey guys, my name's Ryan

I currently own a 1993 Toyota Celica GT-S with 130 000km and very good condition.

But it's a 2.2 liter with about 130hp, automatic, and front wheel drive.

I'm looking at this -> http://www.eastwoodtruck-toycentre.c...-al-id-1561599

What do you guys think?

I just bought a 91' RX-7 Convertible and it is pretty cool. 160hp, read wheel drive, and the turbo chassis parts without a turbo, which is a bit more reliable.

wow I'd really lost hope in anybody replying to this.

Well I might as well update it then

I took it for a test drive, got 5 minutes off the lot and the clutch blew. It hadn't been safetied so I guess it was just done. Also found the car bounced a LOT so figured it needed all new shock absorbers.

Pretty impressive record considering it only had 109 000km on it.

Anyways I ultimately decided against it because I found it way too cramped. There was barely any trunk space at all and even the seating was tight. And I'm not a big guy.

I also found that it was barely (if at all) faster than my Celica

So I'm still looking for a fast manual trans RWD car.... but I guess it won't be an RX-7

I like the RX-8 but I heard you gotta rebuild the engine every 30k kilometers!? If anybody wants to share tips on the RX-8 feel free...

I own both, but if youre looking for a convertible.. a Vert RX7 is the way to go. Trust me, top down on warm summer nights/days is niiice. 100x better than a sunroof. Depending on what you "would" plan to do with your rx8 I would suggest for you to get an 09+ than a 08-03. But ask away.

no you don't rebuild them every 30k, just dumb **** holes who don't know how to take care of their cars. The Rotary is a delicate engine, needs to be very well maintained and checked. It cant be run on low oil or coolant, those are where the most issues occur.

Says the guy whose RX-8 is "Blown and being rebuilt" :P

Actually though how did it blow?

RioRya- it blew at 67k mi, but that's because it was my first car. I can honestly say I didn't maintain it properly all the time. I would do oil changes religiously every 3k, however that alone is not enough. The Rx8 is equipped with a low oil light & low coolant light but by the time those come on its too late. I can say that my car overheated 3 times in its lifespan, and I knowingly ran with the low oil light on, instead of pulling over ASAP and adding oil, and you know how important oil is in a rotary, which at the time I didn't know/care. As for the overheating, turns out I had a crack in my reservoir bottle so over 5 years it overheated 3 times. That should be MAZDAS fault because those reservoir bottle are known to be faulty, but because I never got the coolant system tested you can say its partially my fault. Eventually the coolant seal have out after finding out that same day
I had low compression. On my way home it blew and overheated. If I would of made it home and to the dealer I probably would of got a new engine under warranty because of low compression, but instead I got denied because since the coolant seal gave out and that's something they don't cover, they used that to deny me a new engine.

That's why I asked what you plan to do to your 8.

If you want to go turbo, you properly build a Renesis (03-08) turbo, & tune. 09 and above are your choice if you want N/A... my nephews dynoed at 180 rwhp at SR MOTOR CARS. They are much more reliable and well better built all around (theres a list of differences between generations). And they look way more aggressive too. They say the renesis can handle Greddys bolt on kit because its the kit with the minimal power gain, but just as you wouldnt take the turbo components off a TURBO FC and slap them on an NA FC engine, you shouldn't turbo the stock 8 Renesis which was built for N/A, unless you rebuild it properly for turbo.

We have a thread on the RX8 club called "Overboosted Overlords" and there you will find that any FI rx8 that is above 300 rwp has been rebuilt properly.

As for my 8 being blown, I told you the story, and its the same story as half the other 8 owners who blew their engine but don't want to admit it. Nobody ever likes to admit fault. Why I haven't replaced the engine is because I don't want another Renesis. Apologies to the rotary purists but I'm looking at doing an LS swap once Hinson finishes (if they ever do). If not I will strongly look into an FD swap, but being in CA would have to register out of state.

Anymore questions?

That's all really good info. I'm looking at something like this http://www.autotrader.ca/a/Mazda/RX-...o/19_4316263_/

I probably won't go through with it till next summer though, we'll see how things go in the next few weeks...

So how do you guys explain the rotary engine to normal people? I foresee a lot of people asking if it's a V6 and me saying no... Do you shock people by saying there are no cylinders? Or do you shock them by saying it's a 1.3 liter after you kick their ***? Or do you just say it's a Rotary engine and go through the whole "what's that?" process...

the "what's that" process usually, and its even harder when they even know how a piston engine works to be able to compare off of
