ON Rally GSL-SE from Canada

Hi all,

Sold my Open class '07 Soob STi rally car and had enough rims, tires and parts left over to trade for a Group 2 '84 GSL-SE (an indication of the relative cost of running the two cars)

New to rotaries, although my Dad bought a brand new RX3 wagon when I was a kid - all I remember is that it rust quickly and burnt a lot of oil.

Car is being tidied-up and having a couple of cage updates done. First test day is Oct 30, first rally will be Tall Pines on Nov 21 - really looking forward to figuring out RWD

Robin

Rally sounds like a lot of fun. I've done SCCA club racing for 12 years and sold my ITA/Pro7 car last year. Now, I am thinking about getting into Rally, but probably I should start with Rallycross first. Good luck on your Group 2 competition!!

just curious why you sold the Subie. i'd imagine you would have been quite competitive? what's a typical budget for a season?

I progressed from a Production Gen1 Talon to the STi - a big leap in terms of maintenance, cost of parts, fuel (109oct) - and most of all speed of the car. I thought it was what I wanted, but it wasn't.

Now I don't have to run race fuel, I'll be using fewer tires, tires are 14" (cheaper) - parts are cheaper (esp. once I can actually respond to classifieds). And I don't need to worry about crashing a big-buck piece of machinery. We'll see how it works out, but so far I'm pretty stoked.

Thanks for the welcome!

If you're at the rally, stop by the service area and say HI - I'll probably be the only RX7

Thanks!

I'm starting to do a bit of research and have been told that the FC front knuckles/brakes/struts can be adapted to the front of the FB - not sure if the lower ctrl arm fits (the one application I've heard of is A. Havas' Group 5 FB which has this setup with custom tubular ctrl arms - and possibly even the FC cross-member.)

Down the road possibly modified four link for the rear - we'll see if I run into the rear binding problem at the end of the month.

I've ALWAYS wanted to build a rally 1st gen. Still hasn't happened. Maybe one day

None of the FC stuff fits on the FB without modification.

I would think it would be possible to adapt the hubs and etc but you'd still be looking at either a subframe swap, or a custom lower control arm with a different ball joint due to the mounting differences.

Tall pines, eh? I might make it out there, I'm going to LSPR oct 17-19 and sno*drift in january.

Where are you located?

I've got a TON of 1st gen parts too if you need anything. I'd say send me a PM, but I'm not sure how many posts you need here to PM people now. I'll check this thread.

I'm in Orillia. I'd love to see LSPR but the timing's never right for me - my son has karting finals that wknd - and if not for that I would've been co-driving at PFR out west anyway.

Well I'm short of 14" rims for Pines 4x114.3 - either phone dials from an FC or GSL-SE rims AFAIK. If I do end up changing the front end over and going 4 pot, I'm pretty sure I'll have to go to 15".
