WI Keith From Madison, WI

Hey everyone, new member from Madison, WI. I just picked up a 1993 RD R1 out of Fargo, ND this weekend. The car has all top of the line parts and just needs some TLC and fine tuning to get it up an running perfectly.

List of engine mods:
Street Port with 3mm Apex Seals (8k Miles)
Rebuilt Transmission (1k Miles)
AEM EMS (Need to get my computer hooked up ASAP)
HKS Twin Power Ignition
HKS Carbon Ti Exhaust (WAY TO LOUD)
Custom 3.5" Down Pipe
Precision T4 PT67 Turbo
Dual Walbro Fuel Pumps
Aeromotive FPR
850cc Primary Injectors
1650cc Secondary Injectors
Custom V-Mount Intercooler/Koyo Rad
Tial 44mm Wastegate
Tial BOV
Pulley Kit
Air Pump/Smog Delete
Greddy Intake Elbow
ACT 4-Puck Clutch (PITA on the street!)

Dyno tuned at 450 RWHP on e85 with ignition breakup over 5500 RPM (Before Twin Power Was Installed).

First thing I need to do is create a cold/start up map as the car will not idle on its own until it heats up. The the car goes "out of limits" lean under light or partial throttle and spits bad, so I need to build a map for that as well. All the supporting mods are done, it just needs a good tune. Let me know if you guys see any down falls of the setup and what you would suggest, I am sure I will have a ton of questions as I am new to the rotary world!

Thanks!

wow that is a clean car and nice build!

Not in WI, but just across the border

How much boost were you running for the e85 pull?

Thank you! I am running 21 psi of boost. The car has been torn down in my garage for just over a month and its killing me. I have made quite a few improvements:

Removed the dual Walbro pumps in favor of a single 460lph Walbro unit. (Found that the dual pumps were actually knock offs)
Ran -8 line from the pump to the rail
Ran -6 back to the tank
Tapped and plugged 17 old vacuum ports to ensure they would never leak
Replaced the fan switch with a 185 degree unit
Replaced all the coolant lines/hoses
Rebuilt the V-Mount setup to be stronger and more effective. (Duct work to come)
Rebuilt the down pipe to include a flex section and Magnaflow Cat
Added an AEM Boost and Water Temp Gauge (Get rid of the old Blitz gauges)
Changed gauge location from center speaker to A-Pillar.
Rebuilt all brake calipers and turned rotors
Added StopTec stainless brake lines.

There is more to come, but the tune is at the top of the list! Just need to find a decently priced tuner in WI.

Hi Keith and welcome to Packerland...

"tune is at the top of the list! Just need to find a decently priced tuner in WI."

you are in luck... i have been working w Luke Stubbs of Beyond Redline, Green Bay since 2004. you qualify your tuner search w "decently priced." i can assure you that what you are actually looking for is "best qualified." i am here to tell you that Luke is best qualified. i would be happy to supply you w a number of references. i have zero economic affiliation w them directly and pay what you pay for Luke's vast expertise. BTW, Luke has been AEM factory trained but is fluent in most ECUs.

he is cutting edge knowledgeable w rotaries and E85 aswell as probably anything you might be up to. i have had California engine customers bring their FDs to Luke so the drive from Mad to GB shouldn't be much of a chore.

you have a 550 rwhp (SAE) capable setup

73 pounds per minute air
7.3 pounds per minute fuel

7.3 X 1.35 (accounts for 13% lag and 85% duty cycle) = 9.85 Gross pounds per minute or

6042 CC/Min

you have 5060, good for 460 rwhp ON GAS.

that does assume you want to be able to tune down to 10.0 which you generally won't do but it is smart to have some reserve.

since E85 has approx 82,000 BTUs per gallon V gas at 116,000 BTUs you will be running short of fuel very early and if you have a boost spike you will be looking for an engine builder.

that said, nice car and mods.

i am near Elkhart Lake/Road America and should you wish to converse am howracer@gmail.

welcome,

howard

Wow Howard thank you SO much for all of the info! I agree that experience heavily out weighs cost. If I have to pay a little more on a tune and drive away with piece of mind its worth it! If you could forward me the tuners info that would be great. I have heard of Beyond Redline Performance and they have an amazing reputation. I follow them on Facebook and they put out a lot of top end stuff.

Thanks again for your help and once its running we will have to get a WI meet put together!

Howard,
If I am reading your post correctly you feel that with the mods I have now I am 550whp capable or 460whp? My goal is 550whp.

I have been looking at the Rotary-Works Throttle Body and Xcessive LIM, This may help me get more to my goal. But as you stated, I think I will run out of fuel.

sorry, a bit jumbled...

your turbo is capable of 550 based on max airflow output/73 pounds per minute.

your fuel is good for 460 assuming my conservative assumptions. you do always want to have more fuel than you need given the fact that your motor is 80 cubic inches or 1.3 liters.

huge combustion pressure and heat and any stumble and it is rebuild time.

you might find two sticky threads in the Single Turbo section worthwhile:

Fuel Pumps 2014

How To: Fuel injector sizing

i looked carefully at the R-W TB and given the fact that our LIM runners are 30 and 38 MMs just don't see a positive add.

intake runner area 5.70 sq inches
OE TB (2 X 50 mm and 1 45 mm) 8.54
90 mm aftermarket TB 9.85

what's the point if you add a larger TB if you are flowing into 5.70. driveability cannot be comparable given no "primary" smaller butterfly.

i do run and recommend the Excessive LIM.

Howard,
You are a wealth of information, thank you! I may look into upgrading my injectors while I still have the fuel system taken apart. I had thought I read somewhere that the Walbro pump I have can support up to 700 hp on the 13B... but cant seem to find where I found that.

What would you suggest for injectors?

And hello everyone else, we will have to get a meet set up this fall! And good luck on your search for a clean FD. There is one for sale in MN that is a Red 94 R2 which is something like 1 of 34 imported in 1994. Its going for 18,500.
