My First AutoX
My First AutoX
Got there ten minutes early at about 9:20 and was greeted immediately by the other drivers. I met a really cool guy that had built a couple rx7s from scratch and he was really cool. He let me ride along in his e36 m3 which was SUPER fast. I ran B-Stock, where I was absolutely DESTROYED by cars like his m3 and others. I took 9 seconds off my first time by my last run though so I was very VERY happy.
Between sessions, I talked to the fastest driver of the day (an STi) and he gave me some pointers. After which I beat my time from the first session!I sat most of the second session out because I got like 6 runs in the first one. I didn't feel like beating my car up more. Either way, i feel like I learned SOOO much and I had an absolute blast. It was excellent learning experience and even tho I thought I had good car control before I got out there, I was still able to shave 9 seconds off by the end of the day.
Highlights:

Me lined up... ready to rumble.

Me tearin up the track

My slips. Notice the very positive progression!!!
I'd really encourage everyone to try this. It's a great learning experience and I really learned what my car is capable of out there.

I personally believe that you learn more on street tires than super sticky rubber. It's easier to reach the limits on the car, and that will teach you a lot more quicker than if you bought some sick rubber and just went out there. Congrats on the times man! I'm glad there is yet another in the world of the X

just about any small autocross will. Note, SMALL.
The closer you are to a large area, the more people you have who show up, resulting in less runs for everyone because they're so many people. In a small area where only about 10-15 cars show up, it's easy to get that many in.

I have driven both street tires and race ruber durring time trials and i like the race rubber because the runs are a lot faster, but the reality of street tires pushed to thier limits is a really cool thing to expereience too.
nice! Yeah, AutoX is a good time.
If you want street tires which are excellent for AutoX, look at the Falken Azenis Sport. Street-legal R-compounds
And cheap, too.
Anyway, I would also suggest riding along with a faster driver, if possible, you will learn SO much that way.
Last year, I was autoXing my Subaru (impreza 2.5RS). The fastest guy there (he competes in Nationals every year in Topeka Kansas) let me ride with him once. I improved my time, from the run before riding with him, to my very next run, after riding with him, by 5 seconds!

My friend autox's in NJ or NY, and gets 8 runs almost every time, with fun runs on top of that.... not fair considering in Michigan - the SCCA sponsored ones, you get 3-4 runs only... for same price.
nice run times. i'm a newb, hoping to start going to a few this year.
btw, what class did you race in your T2? ASP? Astock?

Race rubber is nice and all, as well as R compound tires when going for a super quick time (which of course is the point), BUT time isn't always the point (in my mind anyway). I like street tires more because you can't rely on the tires to do the work for you...you have to rise to a different level as a driver (I'm talking more about driver growth than overall winning). Once you've hit a certain point of course you need to move up to a different tire/rubber choice though...but I like street tires cuz they build drivers more than super sticky rubber
