ISA.13B HB 929 13BBPT - Wants to be an FC

Well. Hey all.

Say hello to my nugget.

Its a 1983 Mazda HBSHE 929 hardtop. Hopefully Im welcome here, afterall, my car wishes it was born an FC, and has tried all its life to be an FC. It is now almost 50% full of FC goodness.

Externally its been resprayed in fridge white afew years ago (before it came into my hands) which isnt the best paint job this side of Calcutta. But atleast its all the same colour I guess. The black plastic rub strips have been coated in 2 pac gloss black along with the plastic window surrounds (which I wish they weren't).

Wheels we're Rodney Jane Racing rims in 17x7". It originally had 15" Simmons V4s in matching white, but they looked *****, so on went some 17x7" Lenso VPDs.
I smashed 2 of those on an island at a pesky round-a-bout...... so on went the rims in the pics.
Now its in between rims as the front five stud conversion is almost complete.

Engine wise it uses a rebuilt series 4/5 engine, which is bridgeported. She uses brand new housings as the old import ones were munted. On the induction side is a high-flowed series 5 turbo (pushing a max of 13psi to give 296rwhp on old engine, bridgeport turbo is still being run in), hybrid front mount, turbosmart type 3 BOV, modified series 5 throttle body and a polished series 5 inlet manifold. Fuel comes via a standard low pressure pump, 2L surge tank mounted in the boot along with a Bosch 910 fuel pump. Fuel is regulated by a Sard fuel reg, which finally gets squirted by a pair of 550 primaries and 1000cc secondary injectors.
Other cool bits include, but are not limited to; a gilmer drive set, a external oil injection resourviour, an alloy oil catch can, an alloy radiator overflow, a PWR series 5 RX7 67mm thick alloy radiator and a slight smattering of polishing and tidied wiring done by yours truely!

The gearbox is a rebuilt series 4 item with a super light billet flywheel, 5 puck sprung centred brass button clutch and a 1 tonne heavy duty pressure plate. This connects to a modifed 2 peice standard tail shaft and a rebuilt HB 929 diff using a mazda van (E2000) hemisphere modified to fit, and then onto standard axles.

The front suspension consists of standard HB shock bodies reamed out to fit series 3 RX7 koni yellow shock inserts. The shock bodies have had a collared sleve welded to them to allow for some fine tuning of the spring seats to get the desired ride height. 300 pound springs keep the front off the grass. Noltec series 5 strut tops give it some (minimal camber due to stupid design) and a whiteline strut brace helps to keep her front end aligned. In the rear it uses series 4/5 RX7 koni yellow shocks with 290 pound springs.

Front brakes now consist of series 4/5 stub axles, hubs and rotors, with series 6 calipers doing the clamping with the help of some project Mu pads. Rear brakes are standard sized slotted rotors with bendix metal pads.
I had to swap the FCRX7 stubs left to right as the RX7 has the steering arms at the front of the cross member. Whereas the HB 929 has them at the back, this has caused me a few problems. I had to get some work done to the cross member to accept a bigger spigot type ball joint, i've had tie rod spacers made (which I may need to get rid of soon) and started modifying the caster arm, as the 929 doesnt have adjustable ones.

The interior is very standard.......... standard poo brown tweed seats, standard poo brown carpet, standard poo brown door trims and roof lining. BUT I LIKE IT! And it is in near perfect condition. So its cool OK!!??
The only additions are some autometer sportcomp 2.5/8" guages, being oil pressure, water temp, boost pressure, a 3" tacho and the all important turbosmart eBoost. A momo steering wheel makes it a nicer seat to sit in, and for the odd track day my brothers Cobra fixed back bucket seat gets bolted in for good measure. I will soon have my very own pair of buckets...... hopefully not of the plastic $5 variety..... but something more like a pair of Recaro SR's or something nice like that. She has a stereo, cause i do like my music, but that only consists of a pioneer deck, kenwood 4" front speakers, kenwood 6x9"s in the parcel tray and a sony sub in the boot. This comes out for track days.

Basically, i should've bought an RX7 to begin with. But hey, i wouldn't have had the fun that I've had building this car. "The white fridge of fury!"

Heres also a link to a magazine she's been featured in before the latest engine and brake setups were done.

Cheers.

Yep, in some countries they were imported as Luces.

In Japan they were known as HB Cosmos, HB 929s and HB Luces.

Engine variants started as 12A turbos (same as in the gen 1 savanna RX7s)
2.0 MA carburated 4 cylinders
2.0 FE injected 4 cylinders. Turbo and non-turbo.
and later model (series 2) models had a 13B super injected non turbo engines.

Australia only got them as 929s with the MA and FE engines.

If you had a 13B turbo from a Luce it may have been from the HC bodied cars, which were built around the same time as the FC RX7s.

The Luce name started with the RX4 shaped cars, and went through to the HC shape.

Thanks for your kind words too guys. The main reason I built it was because it was different. Still, these days I wish I had an RX7.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I think I've fixed the ackerman issues I've been having with the FC stub conversion.

Does anyone have any pictures of the steering of their FC? (thats a pretty big ask I know)

PS: the HB 929 came out in diesel form in some countries aswell. Estonia being one of them.

From memory it was one of the first cars to come out in all three (at the time before electric and hydrogen power) engine types.

Rotary, Petrol and Diesel.
