Just checked out and bought a Blue N/A 87' FC with 187k mi today, and figured I'd get a jump start on the forum account haha.
It's a little beat and battered, but is nearly 100% stock, and was a good deal as well. I looked over the car over pretty well and didn't see any rust in the usual spots. There are two small holes in the back bottom of the trunk, but all of the rockers are pretty solid. The hatch and sunroof both are rust and leak free, which I see as a huge bonus. The seats aren't ripped, and overall the interior is in decent shape. It does not run (yay) but has run on starting fluid according to the PO, and since then they have done a tank flush, pump, filter, injectors, relay, and cleaned out the lines. I pulled the plugs and did a compression test by ear and both rotors sounded consistent and strong, so fingers crossed there. The fuel pump does not run while cranking/ign, but apparently does if given 12v straight from the battery, so it's possible it just needs some coaxing and fixed wiring. His younger son moved onto wanting a lexus, & he was more familiar with SBC/LS and decided it wasn't the project for them.
Pop ups work, which is a bonus! It also came with a new flywheel, clutch kit, and clutch hydraulics, as this was apparently the reason it was originally parked. Also most of the original documentation, plus a haynes manual!
Not a stranger to project cars, I currently daily drive a turbo '95 miata and have restored two NBs which were previously sitting for a few years, but new to the rotary platform.
Excited to get my hands on it and hopefully getting to make some braps! Will be doing the full fluid change, marvel in the housings, fixing fuel pump wiring, etc. before giving it a first start.
Welcome to the forum!!! Thats a super nice Sapphire Blue 87 you have!! Someone installed TII seats which is a huge plus! The car looks like the Sport trim level with the non adjustable suspension and the rubber rear spoiler and 5 lug wheels. Super good find!
There's a yellow two pin check connector in the engine bay near the right strut tower. If you bridge the pins in the connector and turn the key on, the fuel pump should start running. This sends voltage to the pump and bypasses the need for the engine to be turning over for the pump to kick on. It will aid in your fuel pump diagnostics.
Congrats on the good purchase! That color is probably my favorite on the FC, and it looks relatively clean to boot. Hoping you can get this one running soon and enjoy it.
Awesome, thank you! I knew the seats looked fresh and thought they might have been reupholstered, but TII seats are even better! Considering I only paid 2k, I definitely think I got a good deal despite the imperfections. The owner before the PO seems to have taken care of it, there were two phone numbers for mazmart & rotaryperformance on a piece of paper I found. With 178k mi it's possible the motor has been rebuilt before, but maybe not. I saw that it didn't have the electronic suspension, which is sweet. Happy to not have to mess with that. I figured there was a procedure to jump the fuel pump but hadn't gone searching just yet for it, been busy. That'll definitely give me a headstart on it for sure. I love the color, apparently it's somewhat uncommon as well? Might make finding a replacement door/fender tough, but that's for down the road lol.
