Just bought a 1983 RX-7 (automatic) for my son for his 16th birthday! Bit of a project car. Sat for 12 years, garaged, but, fuel system is obviously horrible!
Looking to get tank reconditioned/lined. It's solid and doesn't leak, but.... lots of rust on the inside and varnish, etc.
Overall, car looks good on inside and out, all original parts and only 57K miles.
Other than having to redo the fuel system, when it ran (ie before the fuel filter would clog after 10-15 minute running) is didn't blow oil out the back end. Hope that is the same after
we get it running for more than 5-10 minutes.
We rebuilt the carburetor.
Finding not easy to get parts, good diagrams, etc.
Here are the original manuals, wiring diagrams and parts catalogs for each generation: Foxed.ca - Mazda RX-7 Manuals
If you can temporarily get it running out of a gas can, it would at least give you an idea of what to expect once the fuel tank has been given the proper care.
Got any pictures? Both of the car and inside the tank via the Fuel Level sender opening might help in determining what the best approach is for it.
Thanks! Here are a few pics. Funny, I haven't taken any of the inside! It's all good, no cracks that I found. Some of the lights in the dash and shifter need replaced and tach works intermittently. Fuel gauge doesn't work as expected based on the look of the sending unit (rust).
Welcome to the forum!! That's a super nice 83! The car looks to have been well cared for. Given the low mileage, the car was used sparingly. Was it owned by older people? Do you know any of the car's history?
