I had an '84 SE that looked just like yours - black with a red pin stripe - I got about 160,000 miles of pleasure out of it before I sold it to an eager kid and bought a used 94 FD - I've had it for 10 years and still love it... Enjoy your SE (and keep it stock).

only one rotory works the apex seals broken. i want to be able to drive the rx7 around town and then take it on the track aswell, and i hear that the easiest way to accomplish this is to just get a v8, unless i want to rebuild every 40,000 miles

Rotaries can last over 150k if you do routine maintenance on them. Mine just reached 45k.

do you have a new rotory?

because from what i have been reading it seems that if i keep the 13b its going to be a new rebuild every 40k

I know you :P, and that 40k thing is a myth, it all depends on how you build it, and how you maintain it/drive it.

Owning both, if you are looking for power and reliability, the V8 would be easier on the pocketbook.

The engine issues you are reading about are related mostly to rotaries that have turbos. The 3rd gen (FD) is famous for lasting 40-60k when you are rough on it. 2nd Gen (FC) Turbos last a little longer and 1st Gen (FB) like you have and FC's that are naturally aspirated last a long time.

If you are satisifed with the car and it's power levels as is, I would say leave it the way it is. They are usually reliable and fun without worries. You can get 150-200k out of the engine if it is taken care of.

Great looking 1st gen. I have a black 85 GSLSE as well, but it's in pieces all over my garage.

As for yours, if the stock 6-port 13b RE-EGI runs well....That's hard to beat. I drove mine for years in stock condition and had a blast!

Over the years the rust and decay got the best of it, and im starting the process of either a Holley 4-barrel N/A rebuild or a S5-T2 engine swap. Plus there's a TON of body and interior work that needs doing. Of course if I win the lottery between now and then, I'll toss in a 20B!

Good luck with your toy!

Not really. Regular maintenance, staying away from things that will jar the drive train like 8k clutch drops, etc. If the motor stays dead stock, these are pretty reliable cars. If you are satisfied with it the way it is, drive it until there are problems. The head scratching comes in if you want more power.

where is freeport?? im in miami and i'm shopping for a FD so hopefully i'll add a nice car to the collection of owners on here also!!

i havent seen ur car cuz i cant see the pics here at work but hopefully its nice too lol.

in my opinion i would save myself the hassle of having a v8 dropped in and dealing with all the electrical, outer motor parts, etc that you'll run into with a swap... and just rebuild the current engine or buy one and build it out of the car and then drop it. build for reliability...

all engines are basically the same.. you can either build for reliability or build for extremes... either way is fun lol

Thumbs up

There might be a kit out there for the 302 swap which would have things like the engine mounts taken care of, just like there are Chev 350 conversion kits for Porsches and such. The 302 is relatively light for a small block V8 so that shouldn't be bad.
