Talking 3 months with 1979 SA

Bought my rx-7 a few months ago after selling my 1977 mgb and man the rx-7 is so much more fun, has so much more power and I'm just having a great time. and it was only 1900$ for a running and driving rx-7. The front left fender is white along with the sunroof and I'm missing some trim but overall the car is great.

P.S. If anyone has a backseat for one of these (or an fc I heard those fit too) Please let me know I'm interested in buying one. (ill make a post in the marketplace as well)

Here's a picture of it (I generally don't name my cars but if you have a good name let me know)

Welcome to the forum! I think it was a great buy for $1900! The color appears to be Sonic Bronze, which is fairly uncommon. Its a great color though. Are you planning on putting the original waffle wheels back on the car? Do you know any of the car's history? The car appears to be an early 79 as its missing the right side mirror. I'm so guessing that it has the right side hood prop as well. Great car and welcome!

I don't have the waffle wheels and I like the cross wheels so probably not.

I know a little history, The car used to be a brownish color and was resprayed on what I assume was a budget that couldn't afford masking tape (you can see the rx-7 logo above the right front wheel is also orange now) Other than that It was left in a field for a while while it was used as a parts car then the previous owner got it (also planing on using it as a parts car) then he saw how little it needed to get running and driving so he decided to instead make it a track car (he already had one and thought a 2nd one would be cool) but after having trouble getting it to run right with a dellorto he gave up put the nikki back on and sold it to me.

Overall it was a great value but the fact that it was a parts car shows, the spot for the hood prop is on the passenger side but it itself is missing for example. but all the suspension, drive train and motor pieces are there and working great so I can't complain. (trans makes some weird noises but other than that)

There is a tag on the passenger side firewall that will have the color code. If you post that we can tell you what color it was born with.

If the color code is not on the vin tag on the firewall, it will be on a silver sticker on the underside of the hood. Some early cars had the sticker and the color code may not be on the vin plate. The color code will be two digits starting with a letter and ending with a number.

From the looks of the interior, I'm pretty sure it was born a Y-5, Sonic Bronze Metallic car. $1,900 for a running / driving SA is a pretty good deal now a days. It still passes smog out there?

Paint code Y5 on the sticker so I guess it was Sonic breeze, I found some much more shiny paint of the same color under some sections of the paint that was flaking that I'm guessing is the original paint under the respray they did. Ive found both white and brown around the car like under the rear carpet bellow the hatch is white, the bins are brown along with under where the paint is flaking on the rocker panels is also brown, ect. My guess is that they had too much fun with some paint and then attempted to paint it back to Sonic breeze with a rattle can (I found a few automotive touch up paint rattle cans in Mazda Y5) and didn't do a very good job.

As for Smog I live in Oregon for 9 months out of the year (college) so its registered there so no smog needed, It wouldn't pass tough it has a rats nest/air pump delete with aftermarket headers. But it runs great and because I don't need smog I'm good

Also one more small note pertaining to the history of the car that I forgot to mention in my last post is why the sunroof and driver side front fender are white, they rusted out while it was a parts car and recently got replaced. pretty simple (the hood pretty rusty too on the underside so I'll need to fix that)

The early cars are more prone to body rust than the later cars, though they both seem to love to rust easily and in similar places.

Despite finding some mismatch paint in areas, its still a great starting point and Sonic Bronze isn't a common color. It looks amazing in the sun and under florescent lighting. Are you planning onnhaving the car repainted?

I am going to repaint it at some point, I am thinking going to go all white just because I really like white cars. and even if its original color it isn't original paint (the old paint that shows in some areas is metallic and the newer paint isn't) and it just doesn't look good, no shine or anything so It need some new paint. its more a question of when and what color.
