Vertical Doors = RICE?

I was having a discussion with a buddy of mine and I mentioned to him that I was getting a body kit and vertical doors installed ... He says that Vertical Doors=RICE?! Coming from Japan, vertical doors are pretty popular for exterior mods since the design of the FD has that vertical door look... I understand that seeing Hondas or 4 door sedans with Vertical Doors makes a car RICE... am I on the same page here? or is it just personal preference...

what is the purpose of having vertical doors? It's not like the Rx-7s doors are so large that if you open them up regualrly they will hit the car you're parked next to. Function over form my man. If you're going to turn your 7 into a show car do everyone a favor and sell it. I don't mean to come off the wrong way, but the whole vertical door thing is getting old.

When it comes down to it, it's all personal preference.

But when you look even harder, it's just a huge waste of money.

Save yourself some drama and spend that money on some engine mods instead...

I say decide if you really like it or not. If you're having trouble deciding ask FDNewbie to post a pic of his car since he has vertical doors.

And on a side note, I've told Ramy many times that I didn't consider his car rice, but rather "extreme, but tasteful".

I say go with what you want.

If you want a straight answer.. unless its a show car, then it is rice because it serves no purpose imo

Save the money and put it towards something useful. Like IC, rad or a new motor when yours evenutally quits on you.

After seeing a guy at the park on the weekend, leaning against his car with his vertical doors open for 2 hours, I can't stand them.

Actually I never liked them, now I hate them.

Dude, its your car if you want them get them. **** what everyone else thinks. The whole "Rice" term has been blown up from its original meaning, and no I'm not trying to start another "what is rice?" thread. I planned on getting the kit, but dropped a few thousand into my new ported motor and single. I'll prolly still get them, and honestly I could care less if people start saying I'm rice. My money, my car, **** everyone else. Just my opinion. Oh and you should talk to FDNewbie, he's had the Veritcal doors for awhile now, and has a lot of info on them.

Heres athread about the doors: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hlight=FDnewbi

The Vertical Door Kit was given to me...As for other important engine mods...I've been gathering parts... the subject was brought up when a few friends of mine saw the Vertical Door kit on a Civic.

But i say go for it, if pple give u **** tell them they were free and they will msot likely leave u alone.

I say go for it. I don't think theyre rice (unless you're planing on putting a giant typeR sticker on them). The doors would give the FD a more exotic look which Im sure you'd really enjoy. With vertical doors you wont have to worry about your passenger opening the door into another car, wall, pole, etc.

Atleast you didnt say "y0! I just bought My F-DEEEE AND eYe wNat 2 dr1fT aNd in-stAll LaMb0 do0rzz!"

if they're free then who cares. With the exception of Ramy, I think it's funny when people get out of their cars.....they seem so proud that the doors raise up instead of out.

everyone has their own opinion which is cool...that what a forum is all about...self expression. the main thing is that rotary owners are here and even though the FD only had a few years run in the USA market...its good to see that the sport gets support..whether its from everyone's self opinion...

Wow Dan and Adam...I'm feelin the love. How come I ain't neva heard this to my face, eh?? Wait...maybe it's cuz I'm about one foot and 50 lbs bigger than ya

J/k...but on the real, yea I get some flack for my car every now and then. It's really a love/hate thing. Either ppl LOVE it, or they HATE it. If they like it, I take it as a huge compliment. If they hate it, to each his own.

As for my experience w/ the door kit, overpriced, yes. But so is every show item, irregardless. It can def. be a hassle tho, I'll tell ya that. I'd agree w/ Jason in that my car is "extreme but tasteful." so it gets a LOT of attention. Most of the time, a lot more attention than I'd like. I just have a preset image of what I want my car to be, but that doesn't mean I want everyone in the parking lot to stop and stare... and...well....opening the doors vertically doesn't exactly help quell the attention fixation you may have. Now if you're an attention *****, these door are def. for you LOL.

So they're a hassle in the sense that you have to deal w/ a lot of sometimes unwanted attention (if you're like me, that is). They do come in handy tho when it comes to parking. I can park LITERALLY against a wall, almost sideview mirror distance from it, and have the passenger easily open the door and get out. That way, I only have to worry about one idiot hitting one side of my car haha.

They really haven't given me any problems otherwise. I've had the kit on for more than a year now, no leaks, no alignment issues, etc. But, w/ any show peice, it's designed for show, and not being a daily beater. So I'd imagine the shocks won't last forever. But I haven't had a prob w/ them to date, thank God. Also, professional installation is absolutely required. A LOT of ppl have bought these kits and start crying about how the door doesn't line up right blah blah. That's cuz some ppl take on projects that are bigger than they can handle. It takes a LOT of work and lots and lots of hours to install the kit completely (even though it's bolt-on). Keep in mind you have to extend ALL the wiring coming through the door and fender. So you're taking off the front bumper, fender, door, hinge, extending the wires, putting the hinge on, putting the door on, aligning it PERFECTLY so you won't have a prob later (a lot of time spent here), then putting everything back on. Long story short, it'll work about as good as the amount of time you've put into it. And my doors work perfectly.

As for rice, ppl can call things whatever they like. I personally think the stock FD looks nice and all, but it's too soft for my taste. And I think being hardline that you gotta leave the exterior stock is GAY, just like ppl think bodykits are rice. The car is an extension of your taste. Express yourself as you wish, and if you have good taste, I'm sure it'll show. If it doesn't, don't post pics

~Ramy

PS...feel free to ask any questions you have. And I'm talking w/ respect to the verticaldoors.com kit, which is available from www.rx7trix.net. Call Brandon, tell him Ramy sent ya, and he'll hook ya up (including matching a better price you find elsewhere).

I'm not stating my opinion on the vertical doors issue, but I DO get awful sick of this particular issue. I see people on this forum making fun of Civic owners and "ricers" in general for doing things, and then they do the same damn thing to their FD.

If you consider a Civic with vertical doors as being "rice", then guess what? It's "rice" when you do it to an FD too. People make fun of Type R stickers on Civics but then put Efini badges or other JDM badging on their FD and see nothing wrong with it. Or shall we talk about the parking bench size wings? As if they are (in general) any more functional on an FD than on a Civic? So many of the forum members are such hypocrites, it's frankly disgusting.

hey rynberg, i just realized from your location and avatar that you live right down the street from my friends house. every time i go over there, i always look out your red FD as i drive by. anyway, just saying whats up. my FD is montego blue if you ever see me drive by. haha

and so my post isnt completely off topic from this thread: if you like the verticle doors, then get the verticle doors. its your car, do what you want with it. no matter what you do to your car, theres always some guy out there to bash ya...so why bother caring what others think if you really like something.

Cool, shoot me a PM and drop by sometime. It will have to be a while as Rick will likely have my car for another 3-4 weeks.

ferrari with vertical doors?

anyways... i have seriously been considdering this same thing because people around here can't park and no matter where i go, i often find myself struggling to slip into the car without slamming my door into the next car. for some reason, Maryland drivers can't hit the middle of a parking space, a lane on the highway, etc.

Rice Schmice.... If you like the look or the attention put the damn things on. Hopefully they are the "no modification" type. I assure you that most people who do the vertical door thing get real tired of the acrobatic neck moves to get in and out..

Factoid: Scissor type doors are show stoppers
Factoid: Scissor type doors (and gullwings also) are pains in the *** if you are in a rollover accident.
Factoid: Mercedes Benz did gull wings for just a year 1955 (300 SL) before they determined that they were too impractical for their clients. (But lets also face it, the 55 SL is one of the most sought after collectibles on the planet.

Finally, if you have a chance to get in and out of a scissor door car, try it a few times and see if that's how you want to spend your times.

Oh, one last thing.....Scissor type doors = major chick magnet ---forget everything else I said

If your looking for vertical doors. I know the is a kit out there that will let you open them normal and vertically. There is a shop in NY that does it. I also found the website but cant rember the site name. With that kit you can use them for show when you want or just open it normal for every other day. Just do a search you should be able to find them.

Rynberg, dunno if this comment was directed towad me/included me, but I also find a lot of hypocrisy in ppl who hate on ppl who like a bit of show w/ the go. The same haters polish their engine bay parts, get resprays, 99spec nose, the oh-so-coveted stock mudflaps (OMG! SUPER HOT! ) use colored hoses and hose couplers, get aftermarket wheels that are heavier than stock, polished radiators & ICs, etc etc. I think you get the point. It's kind of hard to be ALL go and NO show, or visa versa. Some ppl (as on this thread) may want a bit more show than others such as yourself. I don't ever see you going to a car show etc, whereas myself for example am very much into that, BUT am very into road courses at the same time.

Yes, I'd hate on someone (no names necessary) who puts thousands of dollars into the exterior, and trailors the car everywhere, never pushes it, never tracks it, never takes it to a road course, etc...basically it becomes purely a show item. But as long as they take advantage of the excellent work Mazda did in producing this incredible car, how they choose to present their FD is up to them, and I respect that. Sure, I may not always agree w/ it, but I still respect it (if in the least the work done is quality work).

As for Civics, I'm sorry, but even after all is said and done, the car is STILL a civic. It's not a sports car, it's not a legendary japanese icon, it's not a high performance vehicle, it's not rare, it's front wheel drive, etc etc. There's a WORLD of difference between civics and RX7s IMO. Yes, you CAN rice an RX7 out like civic ricers do, but it's not done often.

I personally don't see lambo doors as a ricer mod, if done tastefully along w/ a lot of body work. But when I see a civic, that same idea pops into my head, "wow, it's nice...too bad it's still a civic." Besides, things like lambo doors are doing what it takes to stay up w/ the show scene, plain and simple. Again, I understand that's not your scene Rynberg, but no need to hate on others if it IS their scene

As for spoilers, I don't see you ever needing a larger rear spoiler because you're a auto-x junky. But at high speeds on the road or road course, a large spoiler w/ lots of downforce is def helpful, so what may not work for you may very well work for me...

~Ramy
