Stereo Installation...
Alright, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to anything having to do with car audio. I have a radio/tape deck, as well as a 6 change cd player mounted in the trunk of an old Chrysler New Yorker. These were all installed by professionals so I have no idea where the wires go, how it was installed, etc. I also have an 87 rx7 that has no system in it at all, no stereo, no speakers, nothing. I want to transfer the radio and the cd player to the rx7 and I want to do it myself but I have never done anything like this before. So I need some advice, since I have no idea how to do this. I was thinking of mounting the cd player in either the glove compartment or in one of the bins, would this work? How would I do it? Oh, and I also have an amp that came with my other 7 that has already been installed under one of the bins but I'm thinking about tranfering that to the one I'm putting the stereo in. Again, I'm a complete newbie to this stuff, I honestly can't even tell you how an amp works, or any audio tech terms. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

the hard part isnt going to be the changer...that just connects to the deck....you wanna make sure that you have the changer properly mounted so its not gonna skip...glove box is nice...but its gonna rattle like hell in there, so id SUGGEST puttin it in a rear bin or back in the hatch somehwere.
RADIO:
w/o knowing how to correctly hardwire a deck in there...its gonna be hard. they dont make wire harnesses (solderings the best) for stock decks like that and really u need to know how to use things like speaker poppers and a circuit tester.
if you can find specs on each car (wire harness diagrams) you might be able to do it...

OK, done this a couple of times :cough:
The hard bits:
1) Getting the deck out in the first place. I'm not familiar with the car in question, but there are a couple of ways they can be stuck in - so remove as much of the surrounding plastic that you can.
There are brackets that screw in - these are usually easiest. Unscrew the radio (usually 2-8 screws) and pull out.
There are also brackets that aren't actually firmly attached - they have tabs that you bend into any gap that you can find and anchor like that. These usually need "keys" to remove. If there are no screws, either this is the case or it's glued in like mine. The keys are usually just thin strips of metal that slide down the sides of the radio and release a couple of catches. You can use thin screwdrivers, just be careful.
2) The full length wire between your stacker and head-deck will probably need to be transferred. So that'll be fun to trace through the car. Don't pull on it too hard. You don't want to break it.
Apart from that, it's pretty much easy sailing: good luck.

Another thing to look out for (sorry I forgot to mention this eariler) is that many stereos have an earth strap on the back. It's a tin strip about an inch wide and is full of holes. This is bolted to the back of the stereo to achieve a better earth. If your stereo seems not to want to come out, but doesn't seem to be actually stuck on anything, you'll have to get in behind it with a small cresent to get it off. Incidentaly, when you are installing, you don't have to connect it to make the stereo work.

Wow, thanks a lot. I figured it would be something like just matching the colored wires up to each other... but what about the amp? It's already fullyin installed in the other rx7 so should I just rempve it and all the wires connected to it? Where would be a good place to mount that also? Because where it's installed in the bin now it kind of messes up the bottom of the bin. Thanks again.

see the above link for specific stereo removal questions. It's a neat little diagram.
Below attachment is what you need to do with the headunit wiring, i.e get a rx7 wire harnes from any audio shop.
---can't attach right now----
(isnt the "earth" strap just to support the back of an aftermarket radio?"

Generally it isn't strong enough to provide much support...
