Speaker mounting alternatives!

I've been working on installing speakers into my FC, and besides all the basic wiring/amp bypassing bullshit I had some trouble with the speakers not fitting properly. I have a pair of 6.5" alpine speakers for the rear, and they didn't quite fit in the rear speaker tubs. Here's how I fixed that.

I've been keeping Satch updated with what I've been doing and he thought it'd be a good idea to let others know that there were better solutions then the fragile/rattly plastic mounting alternatives.

So, I figured that I'd turn it into a thread free for all to show how they mounted there speakers into there cars, hopefully we can get something informative enough to be sticky'd going

Well I just finished mounting in one of my front speakers, took off that little felt speaker cover and used the provided little brackets to mount it to the tabs that it had been on. I was happy with the result until I realized that the speaker's custom grill blocked the movement of my window lever.

Anyone know if you can buy extensions for the lever? Just need an inch or so.

ah, im on the only one who had that problem.....haha. oh well, you just learn to deal
but, as far as the rear is concerned, i just used the metal oem rings out of a s4, the 6.5 coaxials just drop right in, done deal.

peace

Looks good man my next project once my 6.5's show up. How is the sound? I am looking to run 6.5's all around and ditching the 4's up front.

Not sure about the sound yet, my head unit is in the dash but not wired because I'm still waiting for the kenwood stereo-side harness (accidentally trashed it w/ my last car.). If it's all wired right it should be beautiful sound as soon as I get it plugged in, I listened to these speakers in a shop and they sounded good, but they were probably hooked up to an amp with a woofer hidden somewhere

These four speakers + a 10" powered sub mounted right between the storage tubs should produce enough sound to rattle my teeth though.

Any suggestions on how to overcome the window lever problem, short of taking off the speaker grill?

Coax speakers are completly useless in the back of a fc if your going to put some subs in the back. How good can the possibly sound with them facing up and your bass nailing the hatch.

I know that they're not going to produce noticeable sound once the sub is over-powering them, but it'll be awhile before the powered so goes in.

FINALLY someone can probly answer my question. Im putting some polk audio mmc6500 speakers in. Like this http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Produ...MMC6500&tp=106 . What I am trying to find out is they are 2.5" mounting depth which crutchfield claims is too deep for the RX-7 doors. My doors are exactly like that do you think my speakers will fit? I really hope so because I spent 150 a pair and I really really like the feel of the speakers. There going on a JL audio 300/4 amp w/ a pioneer p7000bt head unit or maybe the double din p8000bt. Hoping for some really nice sound. Great idea on the wood mounting thats way better then the metal adapters that crutchfield sells. I may possibly do the same thing only w/ a ported box for better sound.

they will fit, i had some mmc6500's running in my doors. what you will have to do though, is get some mdf, make a ring, and attach that on the inside of the door, then screw the speaker onto it. the stock flimsy hardboard will not hold up to that much weight.
you might want to look into another speaker grille option, or have power windows, cause the regulator WILL hit the grille
oh, and as far as 6.5 coaxials in the rear, they sound decent, and the 6.5 coax in the doors, awsome sound stage for a low end setup
on top of that, do not get a ported box, a single sub in a sealed enclosure with the proper air space will sound much cleaner, crisper and have a better response. a ported box is only for a bandpass system, or push-pull setups. they sound muddier, have a little bit of a lag on the bass itself, but are used for much larger wattage systems.

peace

Thanks magus2222. Im probly not gonna use the speaker grill's like that if They still fit behind the door cover. I was debating using them until I saw how the window crank runs into it lol. So what do people thing about tweeter mounting? Im fairly sure my front one's will be in the door's but im not sure where to mount the rears yet.

I just made the hole in the metal bracket in the rear to fit these 6.5" JBL's from a home bookshelf speaker set (Great sound). The front I put in some same size pioneer 2 way 90w speakers they sound great too, as for the doors I couldn't get the wires to work nor could I easily put new wires in so those arnt in use.
