Re-upholstering a single seat for sim usage, suggestions?

A buddy at work gave me one of the better seats from his 88 Supra, and I like the desing, but the leather is torn in quite a few places (doesn't look like repairing it would go too well).

I want to use this seat in a racing frame for playing Gran Turismo 4 when it comes out, so I'd like to re-upholster it before building everything up. I don't really want to use a seat cover, because most of them look like crap, and in my experience, putting them over leather makes your butt slide around when you're sitting in them.

How much do you think a pro would charge to re-do this seat in a non-leather fabric, or is it that difficult to do yourself? I don't need it to look fabulous, just ok. I'm thinking of just slicing off the current skin of the seat, and just cutting a new fabric to the dimensions of the pieces between the seems, sewing it up, and slipping it over.

I'm pretty sure that method would make something functional with minor visual side effects, but I've never tried anything like that before (I can sew to some extent). What do you guys think?

Get a local trim shop to do the work. Seats are mighty complicated as far as stiching a cover - it's not likely you could do even a halfway decent job.

Call around to some local trim shops and get some pricing.

Might even be cheaper to hit up a local junkyard and look for a seat that's cool and in decent shape. May cost more to fix up that seat than to get a whole new one.

I would also fab some sort of base to attach the seat to so it's sturdy when sitting on the floor. That should be pretty easy to accomplish.

I agree with dcfc3s, I think it would be pretty tough to cut all new pieces and completely re-do the seat yourself. I'm also building a simulation set up for GT4, if it would ever come out finally. I'm using my old stock FD seat. Good luck man.
