Question on keys for the FD

Hey everybody -

Got my '94 BB R2 this weekend - man, I love that sucker!

The car came with one of the stock keys, which is much better than some cars I've bought - I actually bought a 2nd gen parts car once that only came with a worn-out copied key that was broken in half!

Anyhow, I plan on updating the front and rear badges to the newer "winged M" Mazda logo. I'd love to find a Mazda key blank that would work in the FD that has that logo on it. I'm not big on the Efini logo, and I've seen the Spirit R key for sale, but the red key is a bit obnoxious .

I'm wondering if Mazda had a US car after they changed to the winged M logo (which was 98 or 99) that used a key that would work on the FD. If so, I could just get some of those blanks and have them cut properly.

Anyone heard anything about this?

Dale

I don't know about the "Flying M" logo, but I purchased one of these keys off eBay over the summer:

https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/perfect-key-my-new-lockset-327303/

I had it cut my Mazda using the VIN. It works in the door and ignition, but doesn't work for the trunk lid. It's not a huge deal as my trunk release still works.

Yeah, I've seen those, but they're a bit flashier than I would like. I just like a good ole OEM quality key with the simple OEM logo on it.

I might just need to roll down to the dealer and mess around with their key rack.

You might want to try emailing JT Imports. While they only list the red Spirit R one, I imagine the do that only because it'd sell more.

The Efini key is solid. I think the Efini badges are cooler for the car anyway since our version of the FD came with those and not the flying M badges. But yeah the chances are, you can get a M key if you look hard enough for one.

Well, talked to Ray Crowe about it - he doesn't believe there's any newer key blanks that will work. Bummer! I'll probably get up with Jason at JT and see what they have across the sea .

If the Spirit R key works then I can assure you that other keys made for JDM FDs will fit too. I have an Efini key that is really nice so that's an option to fall back on if you don't see anything else you like.

I have one of those ebay keys for my protege. It works better than the one that came with my car. Also my friend has one for his mx-6, same story - better. It does depend on where you get it cut though. Wal-Mart wont do it because it wont fit their machine. I went to a true-value hardware store to get mine cut. Cost 50 cents more but I am happy.

The Flying M key is just as easy to get as the EFINI key here. It was in fact a 99-02 key, just the SPIRIT R one was red, but with the same flying M

Try a Miata key blank. They're the same as the FDs.

Thanks for all the input, everyone! That's interesting on the Miata keys - I'll research that one. That makes a lot of sense!

Thanks,
Dale
