Well, you need some sort of photo editting program to shrink or compress the pictures. I don't know if there are any free programs available on the web, but I use Picture Publisher (which of course isn't free).
The best bet is to find a program that can do JPEG Compression. That will help reduce the file size without reducing the picture size.
As for attaching images to messages, look below the message box when you reply to a message. There should be an "Attach File" section.
