Question Need Speaker Info!

Hi-

I was wondering what you guys have for speakers in your Rx-7's. I have a 1986, and I don't want to modify too much. I was wondering what you guys have...and how hard it was to install. I have a Sony X-Plod head unit (46w x 4ch.).

Thanx.

Mike-

And it sounds AWSOME!

Up Front:
Pioneer 6-1/2" in the doors,
Coustic 4" in the dash,
Pioneer 1" Pue Carbon tweeter near demister vent,
crossed over by a Focal 3 way

In the Towers:
Polk 6=1/2" coax

In the Dash:
Pioneer Premier DEH-P730 CD unit

Comming Soon:
single 10" sub and amp built in to the
spare tire well...

That's cool. I just put one in there last saturday. It was a tight fit. It took about 1" out of the cargo space and sounds pretty cool. I still have to fix the leaks and rattles and new carpet for the back wall. Anyway...

Still in the process of installing.
Pioneer 6 1/2" woofers in the back tubs on the shock towers.
Pioneer 3/4" tweeters on the sail panels on the doors
Still got the stock 4" in the dash
Pioneer 10" free air sub mounted in the spare tire.
My '86 didn't come with door speakers
Factory head unit.

I am still sorting out the details with my amps and crossovers. Hope to get it finished this weekend.

Installation was pretty typical. The sub install took lots of measuring and wood working.

6 disc CD changer in the glove box soon.

I would be interested in the details on the sub enclosure, size, volume and construction! Any pics?

Yes I plan to post pics. Been too busy trying to get all the other crap installed. I had been thinking of doing it for years. I wanted a sub but didn't want to sacrafice interior space. Guys at the car sterio shops just looked at me funny and shook their heads.

I am currently feeding the sub 160watts rms it is rated for 250. The sub is a free air so I only had to mount it to a board then mount it in the back compartment. The back compartment (with the spare still in place) is the enclosure. I still have some major leaks where the mounting board meets some of the cars structure. I can just about get the factory carpet to cover the whole thing (which is what I wanted) It protrudes into the car by about an inch (I used a 3/4" thick board). It is hard to describe volumes but my fin is a little loose and it is vibrating it like crazy (one of the rattles I have to fix) I am very happy with the results so far. It is actually turned out better than I thought it would.

I'll post more later

Depends on your car's model

I think that all doors (inner steel panel) can accept speakers. Physically they are located near the front lower edge and will accomadate up to a 6-1/2" unit. My '91 has them there and the inner door skin had added pockets for them.

Search on Ebay or on this site and you will see pics of these setups.

Door speaker location

Try this link, it's a T11 and in the picture you can see the opening in the door sheet metal where the speaker would go...

My car has no door speakers either and I am not about to start cutting it up to put some in. I put some componenet speakers in with the tweeter up high and It sounds good. For bass get a sub. Can't get enough out of a 6 1/2 anyway.

I'm in about the same boat, there are a couple of good stretches north of here, but, the cops keep a close eye for those trying a high speed run

So, not sure what she'll do...

You will probably do a modest 135 mph. I think thats what my FC did before I changed the stock status.
And yes, you do need a lot of road to get up to that anyways...
Hope it helps

Forgot to coment on the door speakers
How good are you with installs? depending on that, you can pretty much do an easy thing which almost would end up looking stock.
Take the door panel off and replace the cloth cover cut a hole roughly the size of the speaker. To cover the hole, find the big old speaker from your grandpa's stereo(you know the cloth they put on home systems) use it there. re upholster the door panel. I think its sort of simple.
The pannel is easy to take appart and as long as you dont damage the cardboard you should be fine!
Then again, you could just stick with your 4" floor firing stock speakers and the rear 6.5.
