That MiniDisc/TV/CD deck is worthless so it makes sense for you to get it for free. MiniDisc and Analog TV are uncool. I would give it to the electronic recyclers. JDM decks also do not adhere to our FM band. . .
IMO it's not worth the effort

Really?
That could explain why I can't get the radio in my RHD FD to pick anything up

By the way, I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but the Japanese radio frequencies are different. You're going to be missing a large number of "regular" stations if you plan on listening to the radio.
Don't let that stop you though, it's a cool unit and radio sucks. You could probably also just get an HD tuner if you really like AM/FM.

The only thing is that it's not really JDM. All the menus etc are still in English. The only thing that's in Japanese are the labels. I've never seen Japanese electronics that actually have Japanese menus unless it has a real LCD screen like a TV or computer. All the buttons and menus are still the same. EQ is equalizer, volume, etc. So you won't be able to tell the difference between this and a US Sony unit, they are practically identical.
HOWEVER
If you really want some cool JDM electronics for the car, go get a Japanese radar detector. They have a Grand Theft Auto style radar screen that shows the streets and cops are blinking red orbs. I first saw this in a taxi of all things and I thought it was BS so I watched the blinking red orb and sure enough, they were actually cops. The tracking was extremely accurate. It had the most animated display and voice commends etc that I had ever seen. In addition to the big main LCD screen it had like a little HUD. The coolest automotive electronic I have ever seen.
But the Japanese FCC is pretty strict so the cops are limited to pretty much K-band. So it won't really work that well in America, it would be mainly just for show unless you can modify it. And the GPS system it uses is a network linked to other users of the same brand, that's how it shows cops that are out your range. It tracks them all in real time. So it might not be that effective, and who knows if you could get GPS road maps for American streets that would work with the system. It's very impressive how it works in Japan. It actually shows street patrol cops on foot, it tracks them all by their radio frequencies.
