Stare at it for a few minutes, that horrid look may cause it to peel off by itself! Nah....go have a few drinks, its semester break. The above suggestions sounds good to me, be careful of the heat gun. Too long of exposure may melt the window seal or the laminate sandwich in the windshield.
My friends truck windshield got this "star" like image from too much exposure of a heat gun.

You don't need a heat gun. A new 1'' scraper blade (sharp, dull scratches glass) and something to keep the adhesive from sticking to the blade (like said above, glass cleaner works just fine) and it should be cleaned and gone in very short time.
If it's on the windshield, don't use a heat gun. Laminated glass will break if heated to quickly and specifically in one central location. I had to break 3 windows before I finally learned the limit you can heat them to (tinting shop) and I'll tell you this....it doesn't take much.

I use a new razor blade and then remove the glue residue with Wurth Clean-Solve. We use it at the dealership to remove the dealership plaques and stickers from cars that have been dealer traded to us. Goo Gone doesn't work nearly as well.
It won't hurt paint as well, as long as the cloth you use is non-abrasive.

honestly i dont suggest a razor blade. go to any body shop and spend a dollar and buy one of their steel wool kinda things. its not like ones you wash dishes with, its more fine and will get anything off glass. even bugs and water spots. all body shops have them.
A razor blade work just fine, I had 3 stickers on my 7 when i bought her. I just used a razor blade from a carpet knife then used pomolive(sp?) on it to clean the last bit of residue.
