Front Size door speakers on FD

Will a 6.5" component speaker fit in the door with minor modification? Or am I just limited to the 5 1/4?

Search n00b!

Ha

Yeah, 6.5s will drop right in your non-bose R2. It's the depth you have to worry about. I dropped some special shallow mount JBL's in up front w/out any real modification required (had to cut the plastic bracket a bit for clearance). I think mine were like 2 and 1/16" top-mount depth. Infinity has some shallow mounts too.

Have a search around... I think others have fit deeper speakers than that w/out problems.

Hey, I saw a CYM in Long Beach near Mazdatrix yesterday (Monday), was that you?

I think it is around 2.5 inches if you cut the non-bose bracket. Watch out for the window.

The Boston Acoustic Pro Series 6.5 components should fit with minor modifications listed above. Mounting depth is 2 3/8 or 2 5/8 on those speakers.

What's the measurement for those speakers front-to-back? Drop-in mounting depth in a non-BOSE FD is only ~2.5".

The newer models aren't going to work. I was considering those speakers since my friend's audio shop is a BA dealer, and they would not fit. I ended up getting SL65 (http://www.bostonacoustics.com/ca_pr...&CategoryID=14) coaxials for the front.

I can vouch for that. At least, they didn't fit in mine with only 'minor' modifications.

I just found this out the hard way. I got a set of Polk/Momo fancy carbon coaxial speakers back in the spring and threw the rears in right away. I did the fronts while I was doing my TO4R, but found out that the depth was very wrong. I have done all sorts of cutting and fitting on them and couldn't get them in because the windows hit them 3/4 of they way down and they don't clear by about a half centimeter or so. I had to drill the spacer brackets that came with them to mount them with the speakers and when I tried again, the door panel wouldn't fit on. I'm going to have to figure out how to space the suckers about half way out. Maybe run the bracket through a bandsaw or something. I put the stock speaker back on where I was experimenting and left it at that for the time being. I'll mess with that later. Its deffinitely better to check your depth and avoid the trouble though.

I'm sure with some slight modifications you can fit a 8-inch woofer in the door panels.

Yeah, take the door panel off, and keep it off. Also, never roll down your window. And you'll have to slam the door extra hard to get it to close.

Here's an 8" woofer for ya - Elemental Design's E8A:

Are these the speakers you installed?

JL Audio XR650-CSi

If they fit without any major problems I'll go ahead and get those, I just need to be sure because I definitely can't return or exchange them once I purchase them

Yes they are... great speakers. For the price range they are the best I've heard.

I installed those JL audio speakers in Bose housings - but the housings needed extensive work. Stock door panels and speaker grills. I put the tweeters in the "A" piller and the crossovers in the kick panels. The Bose door speakers are tiny, I think 4" or so. I cut the Bose plasic housings and fastened in new fronts on them, and sealed the thing with silicone. I also redid the porting (enlarging it and adding 7- 3/4" holes in the bottom of the housing). I stuffed the housing with long fibre wool (supposed to be the best for dampening). The front of the speaker box had to be moved out 3/8" or so and the magnet presses gently against the back of the box.

They sound great. I put JL 5X7s in the rear (changed the Bose panels to non-Bose by buying stock non-Bose grills and breaking out the back of the "storage bins"). I had to make my own rear mounting brackets.

Similar setup to mine. I have the tweeters up front in the door triangles by the mirrors crossovers and mids in the doors. I'm running the 5x7 components in the back mounted the woofers in the stock location and then put a hole in the panel just front of the speaker grill for the tweeters. Sounds great this way and looks pretty clean. I've been asked a couple of times if the car came stock like that.
