FD stock stereo problems...
well... i have a problem with my CD player not reading CD's. apparantly the lazer may be mis-adjusted (from what ive read online) and there is a way to readjust it. eihter way, i was trying to remove the stereo but the dual antenna wires were lodged in back of the dash... and i ripped the wires out of the head unit while trying to remove it. my question is which wires go where??? im going to resolder them. thanks. -heath
(also if anyone has any experience adjusting the lense in the CD player id love to hear some tips) .

You might want to check into a NAKAMICHI unit. I don't know much about car audio, but they seem to have an understated design and during a search here, they were reported to be quality units whose back-light display closely matches the amber color of our other dash lights. Unlike my OEM CD unit, they'll read CD-R and hopefully won't skip so easily. Everything would be single din, but fortunately I still have that storage din box that came with my R1. My wife recently asked what I wanted for Christmas too.

IIRC there were pictures in some of the threads I found here, or you could check NAKAMICHI'S site here: http://nakamichi.com/home.html Personally I'm looking at the CD-400. They have pictures with the backlighting.

I don't know if this is the latest Nakamichi or not, but it's sumthin':

As for that antenna connector:
One of those 3 pins on the stereo is probably ground. Get a tester and see if one has continuity with the case. Connect the cable sheilding to that pin.
As for the remaining two wires; It appears they are for the two antenna connections. The antennae are passive (won't blow up anything), so try plugging them in one way, then the other and see which gives the best reception. I wouldn't be suprised if the order didn't matter since our stereos use a diversity system.
BTW, I've never taken one of these apart before. Otherwise, I'd just tell ya which goes where.

i wonder if this thing does mp3's? or has an aux input for say an ipod. from what i can tell this freakin thing costs around $1,300.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if the cost werent absolutely rediculous id buy it now... but for that price id rather just fix my old stereo somehow.

It's hard to tell for sure, but that looks like the CD-700II, which I think is the top-of-the-line. I'm looking at the CD-400, which is considerably cheaper. Doubt it will take an I-Pod. I think it's MP3 capable, but not sure. I understand that it will play CD-R and is designed to have better tolerance for road shock. The new ones listed on ebay have been going for ~$350 plus shipping. I haven't found a local dealer near me yet.

You could replace the stock stereo with any Mazda Double Din Combo. I replaced mine with a Mazda 6CD in dash player and it looks stock, minus the green tint at night. You could change out the condoms that go over the bulbs which I'm going to do. Here's the pics.
