FD audio--amp locations; sub below hatch cover; wheel wells and floor noise?

Are there any clever places to mount two amps so they're hidden, but accessible for tuning? I won't be mounting the sub amp on the box because even after my old MX-3's alarm went off, they managed to toss a huge dual 12inch box into their truck, and my amp was a pleasant bonus for them to steal. My amps are the following dimensions:
H: 2.25" x W: 9.875" x L: 19.125"
H: 2.25" x W: 9.875" x L: 23.75"

The other question I have is about the sub. The box I intend to build will be 10" high to fit snugly under the strut bar, but to allow for simple construction of only right-angles, a 12" sub will be firing vertically, below the hatch cover--I'm guessing just about 2-2.5 inches below. Do any of you anticipate any weird sound problems having it so close to the cover? Taking into account excursion without any contact, would such a close distance to the cover and glass be an issue? I need to keep the hatch cover so that peeping-toms don't get confirmation of a sub back there.

Lastly, since I've hardly driven my new FD enough to know, does much road noise come through the wheel wells and floor (I'll be doing the trunk, doors, and behind the rear speakers already)? How about road noise and engine cruising noise through the firewall? Which would y'all say they go in order from most noise to least noise? I'd like multiple opinions since some may hear more from their engine/exhaust than others, and road noise could be mostly heard from the floors rather than wheel wells or firewall.

Thanks, but I've seen DamonB's (for a 10") and I even designed for a 12", but the angle and depth necessary to accommodate the sub mounting depth as well as the necessary volume wasted a significant amount of space in the trunk compared to a rectangle, wiring upwards. This is why I'm interested in a vertical placement, yet with the cargo cover in very close proximity, of which not many people have or the subs are much farther from the cover than mine will be. I've been searching the forums for about a week, so I can't remeber exactly but I think my design was 28 inches deep. So, I'm still needing some opinions on a sub being about 2 inches from the cargo cover, and ideas/experiences for clever amp placement.

Thanks for the link of what David Hayes worked on--it's great to see some data on spray-dampening!
