It's going to rattle the hell out of your wind deflector FWIW - That's pretty much where they put the subwoofer in the factory Viper system.

It can. Depending heavily on the quality of the plywood and the wood used to make those plys. Some plywood such as birch ply or A-A marine plywood can be very good for making boxes, while other types of plywood with lower ratings can contain imperfections and poor adhesive materials which can lead to poor performance. MDF is generally considered the best bang for the buck when building boxes because the material is generally consistant and easy to work with.

 

Yeah, I thought of the dirty "R" word. I've got the whole bottom side of the reardeck sound deadened (which makes it absurdly heavy) from having the JL10 under there. If I end up mounting the 8 like the pic showed I was probably going to remove the wind deflector. The diameter of the 8 was too wide and I was either going to have to angle the woofer and always have the deflector up, cut the deflector, or remove it all together. I was also inspired by driving my brother's Boxster S, they put a transparent permanent deflector between the seats. I was considering fabricating something similar

I'm surprised no previous RX vert owner has posted anything similar to the Viper pic? It seems "common sense" to want to put it/them there. But then again I got a better idea of the work involved and backed off.

It seems like the 8 under the deck is going to be just fine, but time will tell.

 

Under the deck surely is the popular choice.

Ive considered taking my top out permanently and making a fiberglass cowl (ala Corvette) and building the subs into the lower part of the covered area as their own deck along with the amps. Basically they would have a little "cave" under there covered on top by the fiberglass.... but that's a big project I'm not quite ready for.

Go for it. I was thinking of using fiberglass to make mine, but I hadn't worked with it before, so I thought it would be easier just to use wood.

 

Poor performance as in the wood seperating, causing rattles and leaks? I guess only time will tell. It sounds fine right now.

Yeah that's part of it wood separation, but also there is typical a lack of uniformity in the wood. Some areas are dense, some not so much. These can cause other sound quality issues. It might not be an issue for a casual install, but just knowing it was there would give me nightmares.

 

DKJ basically summed it up for me. In my expirence, just say no to plywood.

 

I think I'll be fine. Like I said if starts giving me trouble I just start over. I made my choice with good reason, weight. This artical said plywood can weight half as much as mdf, and doesn't say that its not a good Material to use. Yes its from the 80s, but it was from a book and wood hasn't changed much since then, only the power from subs. I'm not running enough watts to worry about it.

And I don't like to think anything I've done to my car as "casual".

 

I meant casual as in non-competitive, not as in the quality of work.

99% of installs aren't meant for competition, I figured "amateur" would have a less appropriate term.

No, I would not consider my box a competition setup.

 

Here's the even uglier side of my enclosure. The woven material you see is fiberglass matting cut into strips. I included a pic of the well, add some deadening material to the well and it form fits, with very little unused space.

I've installed a couple of sub setups in my FC and I found that the box in the storage bins sound like S--t. I was using 8" Kicker competition speakers with an Alpine v12 amp. It looked the best, but did not perform good. I ended up buying a 8" 4ohm dual voice coil Bazooka tube and mounted it to my rear strut tower bar. Looks good and sound great. My amp is located in the storage bin now. My garage has a picture of the bazooka tube installed.

It sounded like **** because you probably didn't do what I did to relieve pressure. Theres no reason you(anybody) can't make them sound good in the bins, I did.

Oh it would have been the same reaction in person too.. I don't remember exactly what I said but I was about the packaging peanuts I thought they were leaving it in the box as you would with polyfil. Instead of using it as a unit of measure. haha But yeah I have some ployfil in mine but I'm not sure of the effects. Anyway, here are some pictures I have...

The purple paint is what I had around, it's chipping because there was some weird primer stuff used that didn't work. And this was my first and cold *** winter outside box. So it's not the best. Although I think it's alright I could certainly do much better now that I have some experience.

 

I found an old pic of my sub in storage bin. I did not want to cut the lid up, triing to keep all parts on my 10th original. Now the bin looks like this.

 

so i finally got around to building a box for my 10. what i did was take out the passenger side storage bin completely and build the box within the parameters of the stock bins, its a pretty small box but i'm not going for huge slumpin bass, it should sound pretty tight because the airspace is limited, but i utilized what was available to me . it's drying as we speak, as soon as i get it screwed in and carpeted i'll post pics, just giving an update.

 

hmm, tried out the box that i made and not too satisfied with it, the bass it gives is ok, tight and punchy but just not enough for me, i made it as level as i could without having to make it slanted to conform to the bottom of the bin, so it was only about 6-7" deep. i'm going to redo the bottom half of it and make a custom fiberglass enclosure so it'll give more air space. should be done with it pretty quick so i'll let everyone know as soon as i finish

10 inch oldschool Rockford Fosgate Punch.

What I did was instead of making a box, I used the composite material that is already below the bins and injected Great Stuff Foam to make the bin area enclosed. Then right behind the passenger seat, near the bottom side of the bin, I drilled out a 3 inch hole and inserted a bass port and sealed it up as well.

Sounds great and have ran it like this for 4 years.

 

How does those speakers sound in fiberglass enclosures? Don't believe i've heard any like that yet just mdf.
