Cloudy Paint/Finish

The Finish/Paint on my 88 Red Convertible gets cloudy a few days after I wash and wax the car. The car looks real shiny from a distance but up close you can see the cloudiness. The car has been repainted, not sure when, I've only had it since last October. I don't know if it has a clearcoat, is there a way to tell? Any ideas how I can fix this? BTW: I live in Arizona, we don't have rust but the sun destroys the finish on cars. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Have you tried buffing it?

It could be that the paint is old and it only stays shiny because of the wax. Remember paint oxidizes so buffing out a thin layer of paint will bring back the color.

Depends on your definition of buffing. I have a 6 inch polisher (2600 rpm) that I have run and run over the car till it's practically burnt out and still no improvement. I have also tried to compound out the paint (rubbing softly) with no improvement.

You could try washing it with dishwashing soap, it will take the wax that is currently on there off and then wax it again to see if you had just put too much wax on it.
You should only wax your car 1-2 a month otherwise you are just putting wax on top of wax and maybe that is causing the cloudiness. . . . . Maybe
Hope this helps!

I know that little trick about dishwashing soap. I was surprised when I first heard it because as a kid my parents always used it (on dishes, cars, and pets!) But that was the late 60's - early 70's and people just didn't know better (about alot of things).

another trick with dishwashing soap is to let is sit on your tires for 10 minutes or so. the rubber aborbs some of the oils and when you rinse them off they are a clean black, not plasticky like armor all.

i have a problem with my paint on my 93. and when i wax it, it looks great until the next day. it started looking cloudy at first then it got really bad and now it looks like someone took sand paper to it in some spots. so i took it to a guy that did mobile detailing at my work and he said the clearcoat was coming off and that the only way to fix it was to reclearcoat it/paint it i dont know if this is the same in your case but could be. i might be able to post some pix for everyone to see how a beatiful fd becomes not so beautiful any more.
