I just did this in my '85. Instead of replacing the carpet, I got a "floor mat" for the hatch from Lloyd Mats (https://www.lloydmatsstore.com/ultimat-floor-mats). The quality is great and the carpet is thick and heavy. It fits well and just lays over the existing carpet. Only down side is there aren't holes for the sunroof straps to go through, although I suppose you could make some... Here's a pic of the one in my car, as well as a before-and-after shot.

Thanks! It wasn't hard to do and it made a HUGE difference. Didn't really have much choice as finding pieces in any better condition is near impossible.
