going to replace my rear carpet; any tips?

as you can see it's pretty torn up.

my plan of action is to go to the carpet remnants place (Flynn's for anyone in the seattle area) and pick up some carpet that matches as close as possible, cut it, somehow shore up the edges (i may ask my mom nicely to sew some sort of hem around it).

and of course before i install, i'll clean out the tire well and ditch the donut spare in favor of my AAA card.

any specific suggestions or cautions you can think of?

oh ps: don't get MMO on 20 yr old carpet. the detergent isn't too kind.

I was just wondering about this last night. Have you seen any carpet that looks good? You need something pliable enough to run up the back and over the bins. I can't recall any carpet I've seen anywhere lately that fits the need.

i was planning on taking off that metal trim piece that sits right on top of the bins and tucking the end of the new carpet under that, and probably running the screws through the carpet to hold it fast.

i was planning on using any old office floor style carpet i could find that was at least "close enough" in color. i can always use some dye later on when i re-dye my plastic panels.

Good idea. I'll have to hit the cheap carpet spots around here and see what I can come up with.

I've had good luck with autotrimsupply.com. I recovered my door panels with their vinyl covering. Not terribly cheap, but you can get a 72"x80" piece of cut-pile nylon carpet in lots of different colors for $54. If you can order by the half-yard, a 54"x80" piece would run you $41.50.

Sewing seam-binding around the edge isn't much of a trick. Get your mom to show you how to thread the sewing machine and I'd bet you could do it yourself.

Lowes carries marine carpet in several colors. It is low pile and has a nice rubber backing.

whatever you do stop at the rear carpet.

I redid it and then decided I was going to redue all the carpet. It took many many hours of sewing to get it formed correctly and was a hudge pain in the ***.
