best shift knob for FD?
It really depends on your use. I'm currently using a Razo Weighted CF shift ****. However, it makes the effort of reaching down to shift that much more because it's so short. When I'm on the road course, time is speed. So, I'm probably going to switch it to a taller Momo **** so I won't have to reach as far.
My fav would be this Greddy. This shift **** have really deep threading. it lowers the shift **** position quite a bit, reducing the short shifter distance even more.

aluminum shiftknobs gets hot sometimes sitting under the sun, but my jacket sleeve wrap around will do until it cools off.

I had that Greddy for a while. The problem with that and other shift ***** made of metal is that they get hot making it uncomfortable to hold. Both in the sun and during use.
This is the only car I've ever owned where I do like the stock shift **** and don't see any improvement in any of the aftermarket *****.

Had the Greddy loved it but sold it...
Had the Mazdaspeed leather one, great shiftknob...
Now have the RE-Amemiya, cant tell you yet since I have not driven the car, but so far it feels good.
If you live in a area where it gets realy hot I would stick to a leather type shift **** unless you like your hand to burn every now and then.

That's what i had when i bought my car, and promptly got rid of it when i realized how hot and cold that thing could get.
As far as wether the 5 and 6 speed versions are different....I have no idea but I assume they are the same and we just have a different opinion about them.
I just switched from the stock **** to the Mazdaspeed version. The MS is heavier as it has a metal weighted core to it. I've yet to drive the car since we're currently experiencing -40C temps here, but it certainly feels better than stock
