99 look alike bumper from pettit

The pettit is made from fiberglass correct? The only physical dif is that it doesnt have the liscence plate holder. I was wondering... Ive searched but to no prevail.... how does the pettit bumper compare to the 99 spec and the stock bumper on weight issue? more or less than which or both?

You're not going to notice a difference in weight.

Pettit's fiberglass weighs more than stock if I remember correctly...there was something on this a while back...I think the difference was a pound (maybe?)

negligible really.

Fiberglass is more prone to crack when hit. Urethane (OEM) OTOH is more pliable and "bounces" back into shape.

Damn.. Its only 1-2 lbs at most.. why do people care so much about weight.. If you care about weight, go loose some weight around your belly or your ***.. I think most people I've seen could loose some weight.. including myself.. and if you really care about those 1-2 lbs.. drive your car naked.. Clothes and shoes are what.. 1-2 lbs.. Oh... no cell phone, coins, jewerly, etc..

will fiberglass crack given enough shock? i mean... is it comparable to the oem material in strength as long as it is not directly hit?

Fiberglass does not even compare to polyurethane.

Ask yourself this:
How many OEM bumpers (not necesarily Rx-7's) have seen that are coming apart? I have seen very few, and typically the bumper is the least of their problems

How many RICER kits (for a lack of a better word)? I see them all of the time, with no other body damage to other parts of the vehicle.

Basically if you get a fiberglass body edition just be prepared to leave money on the side for future repairs. Sice at onepoint or another you will crack it.

Nope. That's why it's cheaper.

I have wondered the same thing. The only company that does this is VIS and everybody calls them a "ricer" company. Seems like they are the only ones out to improve the crappy fiberglass bumpers the Japanese brands are putting out.

Wings West is the other company that makes poly bumpers and kits. But it would be nice if they offered some other designs other than the Veilside kit.

I will NEVER buy a fiberglass kit again. It's a waste of money and it's like a lottery with fitment.

Ya i've had bad experiences with FG on my previous car when i got into the accident that ended up totallying off i was hit on the side and the entire front bumper just shattered there was literally nothing left of it. If you do get a non-OE bumper make sure it is poly. Just my $.02

Go look at an older vette. You will see tiny cracks all over the car. I despise painted fiberglass. I had a car that I put a fiberglass hood on. Around the hood pins it was starting to crack in just a year. Really an eye sore.

A lot of body kit makers DO make urathane kits, just not for the FD. The reason is, its not just a lay-one-up-at-a-time job like fiberglass... you have to build a two-pice mold, and to offset the cost, you have to produce and sell alot of them. There simply aren't enough FDs out there, so you typically see urathane for Hondas and such.

Chuck at RE was going to make a plateless urathane 99 replica, but couldn'ty get enough up front commitments to buy it.

As far as the Pettit, its the only FG nose i would consider, because at least you have the flexible 99 lip on the bottom of it for a little extra measure of protection.

To make it worth a while, you need to produce at least 100 units to offset the mold cost. We can do it but the market isn't there. If I can sell 100 units, I can have any bodykit made in polyurethane and to your surprise, they will be cheaper than fiberglass kit. For the 99 spec bumper in urethane, you can expect it to be only $300-350 if we have 100 people. But too bad we don't.
