8" subs good for FD?
OK, my tastes have changed a bit over the years and I'm not so much a bass-head anymore. My whole system is pretty much screwed (my stereo won't play CDs, just radio, and it's not the stereo itself cause I've swapped it out with a couple brand new stereos and it still won't work, so it's in the electrical somewhere) so I'm going to take it somewhere and get all the stuff put in.
I got a box for free from a friend that fits perfectly under the rear strut bar and fits the whole width, almost like it was made for the FD, but I wanted to go with 10s and this fits 8s. Now I'm not so crazy about bass anymore, I don't want something that's going to break windows, and I'm not really into real deep bass anymore either, so this will probably work for me. What I want now is just tight bass (not so sloppy like some bigger subs), something I can take out of the car for track time or driving Tail of the Dragon. Now my only question is which sub, amp, etc. I can get two Audiobahn 8s for about $50 each, and I've always wanted Audiobahn. And I'm not sure yet what kind of mids and highs, but I'm replacing it with something that's for sure. I don't know jack about hooking up amps so what should I look for in an amp, what kind, etc? I'm open to suggestions about all this stuff. Thanks.

you can go with bazookas' with audiobahn in them or solobaric L7 those sound great at 8-10 inch but require a square box. hooking up subs and amps are easy you can go read hanes extreme performance entertainment or something they will tell you everything about it

I'd rather not do a bazooka. I already have box anyway, I was just wondering if an 8" gives enough bass to even bother with it, and which brand to go with, although I think I'm gonna do Audiobahn anyway. Is the solobaric L7 a brand (solobaric) and type (L7) or are you talking about just a solobaric sub in general? I was just thinking maybe it's a brand I haven't heard of. I have the basics of hooking up a sub and an amp, I'm just not clear on things like parallel, series, ohms, farads and all that. I mean, I know where to hook up the speaker, power, and ground wires. Other than that I'm kinda lost. Thanks though.
yea go with the silver face audiobahn 8's they sound great with any kind of music IMO 10's sound like **** the bass is to low for rap and there too big for rock
car audio is a breeze you'll catch on once you read a little bit and start doing it

Awesome, thanks guys. I'll check out the Alpines too but if I can't find the same deal I'm going with Audiobahn. I'm getting an Alpine deck though, and possibly mids and highs. Anyone have opinions on the mids and highs? I've always thought Polk was pretty good.
No offense, but Polk sucks. Again, the best for the money would prob be Boston Acoustics replacement speakers. IIRC, they're the FX series.
Alpine and Infinity have pretty good speakers too.

Hey, no offense taken, haha. I was never "married to it", haha. I'll look at Boston Acoustics, Alpine and Infinity for mids and highs then. I had thought of Infinity before actually, not sure why I forgot about them.
I would stay far far away from audiobahn. Alpine type r is a decent sub though, my reccomendation would be the soundsplinter rl-i.

I run the 12" rl-p and it sounds amazing and producing some deep bass while doing it, but not too much bass either. Mike is a great guy and his products are amazing. If your looking for something for mainstream that go with jl I know they make a 8w7.

But the JL 8w7s are no where near the "bang for your buck" category. That's more like "bang for your entire bank account" hehe. And the w7 series requires soooo much enclosure space. I had 2 of 'em (8's) in my FD for a while...

^Actually enclosure space is something I have to measure still, so once I figure that out I'll find out which of these fits the bill.
Why stay away from Audiobahn? I know it was a while ago but my buddy had some about 6 years ago and they sounded great. Granted they weren't 8s and they were in the back of a Civic, haha.

i was referring to kicker's solobaric they have L5 and L7 but ramy brought up a good point type r are wayyy under rated i pushed 1500 watts reall watts thru them for a couple months and no problems yet. they sound clean
I have 2 jl 8w3's under the strut tower and they sound great. Nice and tight and they didn't break the bank that much. They are rated at 150 rms but I have 250 going through them no problem. They work great in a small box.....
Audiobahn is more worried about looking good than creating a quality product. I will admit, in certain conditions, they can sound good, but so can any speaker.
If you are on a budget, the Alpine is great. Although, I'm not sure they make an 8. I would also suggest the Kicker L7. Since the cutout on your box is 8", you can trim the box to fit the square speaker. The L7 is one of those "wonder subs", imo. They are so cheap, yet they perform so well and they are nicely built, quality speakers.
If you are willing to cut the box, you could always cut the hole to 10" if that's what you really want. Your market will open up a lot, too. For a cheap 10, the Alpine Type-R and Infiniti Kappa are very high on my list.
I had a 12" Infiniti Kappa in a 1 cu. ft. sealed box with a Harrison Labs 400 watt amp, and it sounded beautiful. It covered the entire frequency range excellently and was extraordinarily responsive. The 10" has the pretty much the same specs as the 12", as well.
It's all about your preferrence, though.

Well I'm not sure the box is big enough to cut a 10" hole. I'll have to post a pic of it for you guys. I'll check it out though one of these nights that I remember, haha.
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with your comment about audiobahn wanting looks over performance
and I have lots of expeirence with various kinds of subs/speakers
I think they are the best bang for the buck
no sub looks good quite honestly its a black/silver circle

^OK, thanks for your review, haha. That's the info I was looking for, that's what I want to know. I don't want something that's just loud, actually loud isn't even one of my requirements. Not SUPER loud anyway. I'd rather have the clarity, depth and response.

I like Audiobahn's metal sub but the only bad thing with them is trying to figure out there "true" RMS. They rate their speakers in "pairs" and I don't know if that includes subs as well. So my 5x7 plates (spereates) are rated at 100w. wow, alaot ...buzz, no that is max power for a pair. In other words 25wrms X 2spkrs/chanels = 50wRMS X2 =100w Max power.
I run a pair of 8w6 @1.5ohm and 250w ea. Tight and clean but doesn't vibrate the seats.
