1991 RX7 FC Coupe Stereo Opinions

Hey guys so I have a 1991 FC NA Coupe and the stereo system is not working so I am looking to update it.

I am looking at:

A Kenwood double din bluetooth head unit: $160 shipped
Kenwood DPX500BT CD receiver at Crutchfield.com

6.5" or 6.75" Alpine SPS-610 Speakers for the doors and rear: $75 a pair
Alpine SPS-610 Type S 6-3/4" 2-way car speakers — fits in 6-1/2" or 6-3/4" openings at Crutchfield.com

4" Alpine SPS-410 Speakers for the dash: $50 for the pair
Alpine SPS-410 Type S 4" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com

Now I have a issue with the speakers for the front and rear because stocks are 5.25" but many people say they can fit 6.5" in the door and rear. The Alpine SPS-610 I am looking at says it's 6.75 but also fits 6.5..? Would that work? I am after that the window may not roll down if I throw them on the doors.

Crutchfield charges a little more than everyone so I am ordering them on cartoys and geting the price matched with amazon.

What do you guys think of the whole system? Would it be good enough? I am not really knowledgable about sound or sound systems so as long as it sounds good I won't be complaining..

My budget is low so if you guys have any better suggestions please let me know. I am just confused about the door and rear speakers as everyone says a different thing and the SPS-610 I am looking at make it confusing.

Also, would the Kenwood double din fit the FC? The stock stereo is pretty big but I am not sure if it'll fit. There doesn't seem to be any double din kits for the S5 FC.

Please help with whatever you could, thanks.

The regular Scosche stereo install kit for the GSL-SE & S4 also works fine with the S5 and supports Single or Double DIN for any of its intended applications. DIN stereos are of a standardized size (50mm tall) while a Double Din is 100mm tall.

Another option you may consider is reusing the existing stock stereo brackets. I did so with my JVC KW-XR810 and it fit well using the existing mounting holes.

With some creative mounting via some re-purposed miscellaneous holes on the brackets, I was able to scrape out enough room along the bottom of the stereo opening in the S5 stereo trim for a switch panel.

Stock speakers are 4" in the dash, 6" door woofers (S4, possibly S5 too) and either 4" or 6" in the rear depending on the trim level. The actual sheetmetal in the rear is the same regardless, but what I noticed on my 87 GXL (w/factory amps) is that 6.5" aftermarket speakers were actually too small to be bolted in place of the stockers. Best thing I can suggest is get a 6.5" speaker and test fit it for yourself.

As for acoustics and sound quality, this is a rather subjective thing with more variables than I am personally aware of. What sounds fine to one person may sound like crap to another. IMO, my stock speakers circa 1986 sound okay but sound like crap to my audiophile musician brother. I don't crank things up excessively as I rather enjoy having good hearing and I don't need the latest/greatest stuff either. All things considered, your stock speakers are probably a bit tired from age/use but the best approach would be to wire up the headunit and do a back-to-back test between stock speakers and the ones you've selected to replace them with. Then you can make an informed decision based on what you believe sounds better.

I've got a 91 as well and I have 4" in the dash, Infinity 6.5 in the front doors, and Polk 6.5 in the rear shock towers and no issues.

89 gtus here and 6.5s will not fit the doors. But I think my door panels may be different from other S5s. I guess you could make em fit sticking out but I did the 5.25s for stealthness.
I guess I could do 6.5s if they were super shallow.

5.25s will fit in the rear if you have the plates from the original 4 inch speakers. Again this may be a gtus or 89 thing. Or you can build your own plate to fit whatever.

I just bought Kenwood eXcelon KFC-X183C 7" for the shock towers. Trimmed to outside of the plates they came with to fit under the speaker cover, took maybe 15 minutes. I have a set of XR-1800P for the doors on order, those should take a little more to fit though.

I'll grab some pics of the rears as they sit, and update you when the fronts arrive
