1990 Vert Speakers

Hello everyone:

I hope I am in the right section of the site. If not, apologies up front.

I have a 1990 convertible with the radio/tape deck/CD. I have no speakers under/in the dash. Nothing has been removed, they're just not there, yet every search shows this car having dash speakers.

Behind each seat, I have what appear to be small speakers: I have put my ear up to them and hear nothing but static and what I can only describe as "dead/echo sound". If these are indeed speakers (something must be there, I can hear it), neither Crutchfield nor Sonic Electronix shows them under this make and model. Also, I don't recall having seen wiring diagrams showing speakers behind the seats. But if these are speakers, what size would these be?

Crutchfield lists my door speakers as 6.5". Is this accurate?

I know the headrest speakers are 3.5", and they seem to sound about as good as one can expect from tiny, 30 year old speakers. I don't know if there are better replacements for these or maybe even some suitable subs? In any case, I have seen the videos on how to replace these and I just don't think I am going to risk someone screwing up my headrest: this car (just got it a few days back) is 100% stock and I want to keep it that way, up to a point, because obviously I am looking to upgrade the speakers and add an amplifier. I am looking for a professional installation, so they can work out all the details: bypass old wiring/stock amp for the headrest speakers, etc. My goal is to have available and ready to go all the equipment and speakers needed for the job. And size/location of speakers is what I am most having trouble with.

Thanks for any suggestions and/or advice up front, I appreciate it.

So, those dead spaces behind the seats are actually subs. Pretty neato! I broke down and decided a new head unit would be a good choice (I am trying to keep her as stock as possible), as opposed to sticking with the factory.
I ordered an alpine digital head/amp combo, a pair of kicker 6X9s, a kicker 10" sub and kicker 300 watt mini/mono amp, and 2 pair kenwood 3×5s. Not top of the line, but squarely in the middle. Looking forward to hearing the finished product. At the very least, I'm thinking this will be quite a noticeable difference (even with the top down).

The headrest speakers are rectangular and are garbage. There's an old thread in the forum somewhere that by Jason Garel (I'm trying to remember his forum handle) that has great instructions for swapping in some Infinity Reference tweeters for them. I did it in my 88 Vert years ago and it's amazing. I have a few videos on my YT channel youtube.com/vaxheadroom about my audio install. If you have subs, they are not stock! GL!
Here's a good post: https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-gen-arch...cement-936458/
Not the one I was looking for but

Well, the plastic, sealed boxes I removed (and later reinstalled with new speakers in them) from behind the seats most certainly had original subs. As a matter of fact, I boxed those subs and stored them (not sure why, just cause, I suppose). I replaced those with Kicker 4". They fit perfectly in those sub boxes and wired right up. So with removing and replacing (minus the headrest) the original speakers I now have a loud, extremely clear sound system. And with the top down I can enjoy easy to hear, loud and crisp music. Later, maybe, I will replace those headrest speakers. There is a guy down in Colonial Beach (VA) who will do the job at a good price. I broke a zipper when I first was going to break into those headrests, but I stopped because that was just a portent of nothing good coming. So I ran the headrest down to him and he repaired it - looks perfectly original. Anyway, headrest speakers later. The entire upgrade was reasonable, all total under 1K I think.
