$4,998.81 paint job quote

A girl I work with had her Prelude painted by this new company in town and I was totally awestruck by the quality of job they had done. The paint was like a ******' MIRROR, I kid you not! So I stopped by today and dropped the car off whilst at lunch and then they faxed me the quote later on in the day. Materials were only about $1,300, the rest was labor.
It seems about in line, and I tell you...they are THOROUGH. They would take the door panels off the car, take them apart and repair and refinish both the inside and out, for example. Same for the hood and both bumpers. My car doesn't need any major body repair, it just has a few nicks and door dings.
I am seriously thinking about letting them do it. The ONLY thing that gives me pause for thought is...no matter what, some ***-hat is going to ding/dent it again.
Just like the other day (well...a couple of weeks ago now) I had run in to Wally World and grabbed a Subway sandwich and picked up some stuff, came out to find a ******' shopping cart had been shoved into it hard enough to leave a dent, and some of the rubber from the bumper pads literally rubbed off on a long streak after the dent.....

id say its worth it ^_^ thats about ballpark how much i had spent on my prelude haha. at that point, its pretty hard to mess up the car newho with the amount of clear they stick on the car. i had the legs of a big tent blow into my car during a car show and scratch deep into my car and the 350z next to mine. same thickness of a scratch on his took off paint clear to the metal. me? it just buffed right out

Seems a bit high. I had a triple stage color with a pearl paint job for $3000. This price also included a good amount of body work and fiberglass shaping to get the lights to fit properly. He also painted the door jams and made a metal support for the front bumper for that price.

if they're that good... id go for it, that sounds like a good deal for a good paint job like that.

i have these two little scratches on my FD. on both front fenders. about the width and size of a flat head screwdriver... RIGHT THROUGH THE CLEAR COAT. T_T

Thanks, that is the sort of info I am looking for. This is the first serious quote I have gone after.

It was kind of interesting that they also noted that there had been (4) Service Bulletins/recalls and he asked if I knew about them and I said yes, they had all been done.
Pretty cool, I thought.

If they're going into detail like u say, it may be worth it. The shop that did mine only charged 4K, but they also replaced the roof metal, painted & mounted the widebody kit, replaced the hood latch and hinges, and redid the door jams. It came out lookin very nice, no runs or anything. But it was just a stock style repaint, nothing special. Part of the reason it wasn't more is the rear fenders had already been molded on to the car, that and I paid cash.

It doesn't sound all that high to me for a complete refinish, same color, two or three stage w/quality materials. With few if any parts to buy, your obviously going to pay most for the prep labor. If they're disassembly and re-assembly (bumper covers, hood, hatch doors, mirrors, moldings etc.) is that thorough, it's probably worth it. FWIW, that price seems on par with this shop (family owned ) http://ocrinc.com/home.htm
I share your Wally-world parking worries. Option #2 is a good PDR man.

None of my cars ever get dents. I always park way in the back out in the open. So what if it takes you an extra minute to get in the store?

As for the paint job, if it's as good as you say, 5K sounds decent.

Paint job on a customer's GTO is up to the $50k level right now. And it's just a restoration...

Note that includes bodywork, replacement trim, etc.

I'm going through this right now. I took my car to the 2 most highly recommended places in Kansas City and both were right at 8K....Yikes!! It looked as if you got what you paid for though as the paint work that I saw was concours. Both places made mention of bad paint adhesion on my '90 vert and were bidding 32 & 40 hours on paint removal alone. I hate to say it, but I think I'm tempted to take the plunge, the work is truely beautiful. I think in most cases, your'e going to get what you pay for....not that a 3K job is anything shabby. Take Care, Berg

The price is not high. The paint job on the Blurple seven that was in Turbo magazine a month or two ago was 11K. 5K is what I expect to pay for my car. I'm up for cheap paint jobs but my experience is that you really get what your paying for with paint work unless someone is trying to break into the market and make a name for themselves.

I paid $4500 for my paintjob and bodykit fitment with the door jams and stuff painted...it's not worth it...every day I find new tiny little things like rock chips on my rear bumper caps from just the road and my sticky tires...and I don't even drive my car to Walmart or school

No, it's not done yet ($15k worth of engine and transmission that *we* did are still sitting on the shelf waiting for the car to come back to us) and there's some sort of lawsuit involved between the current owner and the guy who sold it to him. It's not a real GTO and it was sold as such...

I feel it's worth it, but you should get a clear bra put on the front to help protect from ricks etc... and do the best you can to just park far and walk to where ever you need to go. dick heads always park up front and just swing their doors open.

Or when you do park far away and the ******** park right next to you and you find a nice new dent on your door, you could just put a big X in their door with a key!!!!!
