at what temp do you run your fans?

what temps does everybody have their haltechs turning their fans on/off?

i am running ON = 195 and OFF = 190

i was just curious how this compares to others' setups.

I have to check the exact temp range; what I DO remember is that I set it up so that it comes on 5F before the thromostat opens. For some reason, I want to say that my setup range is 175 on 170 off...

Will check tonight!

^you are running your engine entirely to cool. you want your oil around 200F and coolant in the ball park of 210F

Why?

The way *I* see it; if the thermostat opens at 180F, it means that the max water temp has been reached under normal conditions. Why would you want to run the engine hotter than that?

On the oil temps, with the stock intercooler, the oil temps stay around 180F under normal driving, why would I want it at 210F under normal conditions?

***UPDATE***

Just checked the configuration and they come on at 180F and off at 175F

BTW - Just checked the manual, and for the S5 FC, the thermostat starts to open at 177F - 182F and it is fully open at 203F.

How do you configure the two speed?

That's not how the cooling system works. The thermostat starts to open at ~180degF, meaning the engine is approaching normal operating temp. The thermostat isn't fully open until ~200degF, which is where the cooling system is working as hard as it can. Anywhere between 180-200degF is considered the normal operating temp range, and the more load the engine's under the higher it'll be. This is assuming you're using the correct thermostat from Mazda. If the thermostat is working properly the temp should never drop below 180degF, meaning with your settings the fan is running pretty much all the time. There's definitely no point in turning the fan on before 190degF. You also don't need a huge hysteresis (the difference between on and off temps). A few degrees is fine.

Those are not normal temps. You shouldn't see numbers that high unless you're racing, and even then if you're coolant is at 210degF you should start to be worried. Why would you want to run that high anyway?

Having the fan ON temp close to the thermostat opening temp will only cause the thermostat to flutter open and close - not a good thing.

Also, having the fan ON and OFF temps at a very narrow range will cause it to cycle a lot - not something I like doing either.

I typically have them set around 210F ON, 195F OFF...unless the customer wants it changed.
This is assuming the Haltech water temp is accurate - for some reason my E8 reads almost 20 degrees HIGHER than what my SPI water temp gauge shows.

Hey Ted speaking of the haltech sensor being off, check out this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/haltech-forum-62/haltech-metric-water-temprature-sender-544788/

If the thermostat is fully opened by 203F, why are you turning the fan on at 210F?

When the e-fan comes on, I don't see any significant temp drop; it just stabilizes the temp to that range (under normal driving), so my guess is that you want to keep it at 2003F max. Am I wrong by following or triying to mimic what the thermostat is doing?

^effects flow. You want it fully open to optimize the flow thru the radiator...

I don't like cycling my fans constantly. I'm not worried running my car at 210F. A stock FD turns the fans on LOW above 220F. Do I want to do that, no.

Yeah, I've seen that thread, and I'm going to do my own research into everything.

I have my SPI water temp gauge.
I have the Haltech display.
I have a Raytek IR "gun" thermometer.
I'm going to taking some readings to see WTF is going on...

REMEMBER, these Haltech sensors *ARE* from *GM*.

This is assuming the Haltech temp numbers are reading correct...

In my case, it's a little bit different.
I run no thermostat.
Most of the "race" cars I tune run a "cored thermostat".

I've had a lot of experience running these engines hot, and a lot of people cringe when I mention water temps.
I go with what I've experienced.
I know my engine makes funny smells once the temps start to edge over 220F.
I use that as a guide.

I have to agree with KNONFS, i normally make the fans kick in at 185 degrees and make them shut off at 175, but, we have to add here that there are cooling systems out there (in a lot of cars like ours) that arent really that efficient and/or given the geographical location we are at, once the temp reaches 185+ degrees it aint never coming down from there. At least where i am from, the tropics/caribbean.
