what to buy?

If I'm planning on doing my own install, and for all intents and purposes, let's suppose I'm a retarded college student with a so-so understanding of cars, what exactly, down to the last wire, do I want to get? Thanks!

An installer and tuner who can competently install and tune these things.

Seriously, I've been on the Haltech Support list, and the BIGGEST problem I see is lack of understanding of how everything works.

I must agree with Ted. If you do not have a good understanding of how electronic fuel injection and ignition systems work then you need to read and learn as much as possible or find a good shop who has this knowledge. as for installing the system it is not very difficult. install a few sensors(drilling and tapping two new holes for sensors), remove a ton of wires and stock vacuum hoses, and a little soldering of some wires. the installation of the Haltech or other brand EFI is routine, but the tuning and troubleshooting can be very frustrating and difficult. Also retaining all the stock accessories can be a bit of a wiring problem and sometimes takes some work to make all systems function. Best bet is to find a local or semi local shop with knowledge of the system you like and work with them on install and tuning.

Darn... that's not what I really wanted to hear

Well, if there's a will, there's a way. Where's a good place to start reading up and learn about EFI, ignition, etc? I'm willing to spend the time to learn everything. How expensive is it to get a shop to "help" with tuning? K2RD is 5 miles from my parent's house in Sacramento, so they'd probably be the guys I'd go to. Is it beyond Joe Schmoe to try and learn one of these things? I'm not shy about getting my hands dirty with the car and learning how everything works, but not at the risk of blowing up my engine

a trip to the local library may turn up some good resources. I don't have any specific books to recomend. Anything that deals with engine tuning in general will help. most shops work on an hourly rate so custom work can add up fast. best thing to do is buy the parts from the local guy and build a relationship with them and if you are a regular customer they will tend to help you more than if you stop by looking for answers to questions. Paul at K2RD has Haltechs at good prices and may be able to help with the tuning and installation or can direct you to a dyno who can. it is not beyond anybody to learn how the systems work but it does take time. I spent more than a year working with three different systems until I found the Haltech and during this time I had to learn alot about EFI and rotary specific EFI problems. this board and others are great for helping people with some of these problems but you will still need to understand what is going on with this stuff.

MtnRacer, if you would like help with the install or with tuning, or would like me to do it for you let me know. I owe you for picking up my parts (which I will plan on getting this afternoon) so I will give you a good deal if you want me to do everything.

The plug and play harnesses are your best bet and make it easy. Give me a call if you need help or would like to talk about what is required or why you would not want to do it. If you lost my number just email me, Styk33@ricemobile.net

Styk33,
Sorry, I just NOW read this post! Wow, thanks! I will definitely consider it. Haltech plans have been delayed a bit as my rear oil seal for the tranny just went caput. Scared the bejesus out of me when my car started to smoke after I shut it off. $800 down the drain... Lol, as soon as I allocate more funds(read: start flipping burgers), I'm gonna go after it with avengence!
