it should... i know i had a problem in an rx3 using TII coils that could no get a spark but it was because they were not grounded. basicly started wiring one night and was just trying to get the car to start to drive it into a different parking spot instead of pushing it and didnt mount the coils. once they were ground, fired right up.
maybe this will be relevent to your problem marc?

It WILL spark with manifolds off but I wouldn't try starting the car with them off.

Well i think i figured it out, 3 plug wires were bad seem kind of odd to me but im waiting on some new one and ill let you know if it fixes it. By the way the car dose spark with the UIM off.

Wow 3 out of 4 wires fail?
You sure the spark plugs aren't bad?

No it was the wires i was puzzled also, i was testing from the coil to the wire and i had spark at the coil but not on the other end of 3 of them, got some new ones and it firing fine, i have spark on all the plugs, not sure how 3 wires go bad but its me so its not hard to expect.

I was trying to trace a spark problem not start the car! It easier with the UIM off to trace everything!
