Haltech Newbie here with 13bt and E6K...
Newbie here with 13bt and E6K...
I'm looking at putting a 13bt engine into my S5 right now.
I have a person that is willing to sell me everything needed for the conversion.
He has a stock ecu and wiring harness.
A few have suggested to skip the stock wiring harness and ecu and put in a E6K.
Now i have a few newbie questions about this aftermarket ECU as i could not find a FAQ page or anything.
All i am looking for is pretty much a stock S5 13bt motor. As of right now i'm not looking at running higher than stock levels of boost, stock injectors etc... This is why i wanted to go stock ecu, but many tell me it's not worth the hassle and to just pop in a E6K during the swap.
I believe this E6K would come with wiring harness and sensors correct? These would be plug and play?
Am i going to be constantly adjusting fuel maps, pressures etc...?
How do i go about setting this up, especially if it's a new rebuilt engine?
I'm not really looking for anything to complicated and from all the information i have been reading so far this E6K seems somewhat technical.
I guess what i am trying to ask is if this is right for me.. Sure i have the money and am willing to go a little extra if thats what it takes, but not if i'm going to be tuning the dam thing for the first week. I mean i do not even have a labtop, is this a necessity?
I'm really confused at how these Haltech systems work and would really apreciate if someone could clear this up for me.
Thank-you
Chad

Don't assume you're going to get a brand new or salvagable harness use from the previous owner.

Once you change your mods, the unit should be retuned.

The compression is changing drastically during break-in, and this changes engine VE.
Changes in engine VE will change requirements for fuel (and possibly timing).
Bottom line, you're going to have to be changing the (fuel) maps a lot during break-in.

A laptop is highly recommended due to portability.

great site dealing with the installation of a E6k on a 13bt, and a bunch of starter maps.
set my system up per this site, and used one of the maps to get my car going.

started on the first try,
I just got one when i swapped a S4 TII into my first gen and its been great. It was alot easier than when i had to wire the stock ecu and harness into my friends 2nd gen TII swap.
Humm You guy's are making me think twice about going with the stock ECU...
OK...
So.. Say i get an older E6K and wiring harness. How exactly do these hook up to my stock sensors? Is it pretty much just plug them like the stock wiring harness would?
How much smaller is the E6K harness than a stock harness because everyone say's its alot easier to install. How do i know what goes where? Are they color coded such that yellow goes to temp sensor, red goes to oil or what? Is there a specific E6K version that i have to get for my S5 13bt engine?
Once i have everything installed, and all connections made how do i know what fuel maps, pressure, etc.. to start off with?
I need a windows 98 labtop? How do i adjust them from the labtop, is it very simple? Like how do i know when i need more or less fuel pressure? How do i go about adjust other things and know what the correct setting will be? Do i have to put it on a dyno?
I have a never ending list of questions here.. I wish there was a fast for standalones but i cannot find one anywhere.

With the exception of the water temp sensor (and maybe the TPS if you have an S5 and if you want a "2bar" MAP using the stock boost sensor), all the other sensor(s) need to be installed appropriately.
Is it pretty much just plug them like the stock wiring harness would?
There is a "flying lead" harness, which needs to be custom cut and fitted.
There is also the "terminated" harness which you basically just plug in to the sensors, but you need to "tie back" the excess lengths.

It certainly is heavier due to the heavier wiring.
The wire color codes are all shown in the written manual.
Check out http://www.haltech.com/ in the Downloads section - I think there is an E6K wiring diagram?

The settings are all "soft set" internally to confirgure the Haltech to control your engine.
Unlike the Microtech which comes pre-configured from the factory...

You might want to mess around with the program to get a feel of how to navigate around the control program.

This is a good place to ask those questions.
I agree with Ted, with the exception of his comment about not using it on a fresh rebuild. I've done it and it's not a big issue. ya engine dynamics change and it means your going to be adjusting things a bit more frequently but it's not that bad. Plus I found it gives you more "face" time with the system and how it works. If your using the system on a new motor it really teaches you alot about what the dynamics of running an engine are.
Lots of the questions your asking can be answered if you saw the system in operation. This spring I will make an effort to show you my car and the Haltech system so you have a better idea of what's going on. I think once you see it in action you'll understand a little bit better, and find it's not as tough a job as you think. Now you seem concerned about the laptop. It doesnt need to be a state of the art unit. There are a ton of places in town that will sell you a laptop that will suit your needs for $100 or less. One last thing, before I bought a Haltech I downloaded the manual and read it cover to cover, I reccomend you do the same. When you read it the first time it will seem a little overwhelming, but when you actually start playing with the unit it will all come together.

Sorry when i said "I have a never ending list of questions here.. I wish there was a fast for standalones but i cannot find one anywhere. " I mean't FAQ. I have no idea why i put "fast".
rx7_turbo2 that is very kind of you to let me ask questions and see your set up in person... I will be looking forward to that come this spring. Thank-you!
I'm gonna take some serious thought into this standalone..
Got one last question..
Would i have to premix if i went standalone with my S5 TII? This would be a major bummer...
Ok maybe one other last one hehe..
How long do you think it would take a newbie to install a "terminated" wiring harness and get everything set up?
Maybe one of the admins could possably sticky this thread and we can make it into a FAQ page for all Stand alones..

Agreed with rx7 turbo2
I installed my E6X on a brand new engine, and it hasn't been a real pain in the neck other than the fact that the haltech wiring harness I had, had one of the wires attached to an incorrect pin making things difficult to trouble-shoot.
But yes once you get into it, it isn't very difficult.
A good bet is to do as rx7 turbo2 said and read your haltech manual about a dozzen times.. and then get a book on aftermarket efi theory and tuning. I bough two of them but the better one is "How to tune & modify Engine managment systems" by Jeff Hartman.
And read it as many times as it takes to fully understand. And then ask questions here or on the Yahoo Haltech forum to get some specific questions answered that you have after reading the manual and book(s).
Plus it will make things infinitely easyer to work with when there are at least three people in the calgary area that can give you a hand.
Good Luck

Wow.. I suggest any newbies go and download the manuals on the Haltech site...
I'm going to print that baby off tonight and give her a good reading tomorrow...
Looks like i can learn ALOT reading that thing.
I've just been browsing through that for the last hour and i did not realize how much stuff you can do with one of these units... It's actually starting to sound like fun and something i can look forward to.
The only thing i am not looking forward to is wiring it up to my car...

If you took your time and was really carefull, and it's your first time it would probably take you the weekend to wire it. It can be done much faster than that, but if you have no experience then I would say setting the weekend aside would be sufficient. The key is to have the modifications needed for the air temp, water temp, and TPS done before hand that way you just have to plug them in. The iwring is easy. The wires are all labled and the manual goes through the process in detail. Plus there's a few websites out there including K2RD and the Hitman's that go through things as well.
I'm not sure anyone has gotten the E6X to run the electronic S5 OMP. Everyone I know runs premix. I like the idea of premix better. I've yet to see an OMP system that works consistantly. Premix allows me to know it's getting in there and exactly how much. I would say just run premix.

Premix sounds like a major bummer every time I want to fill up, especially for a daily driver. I guess I might be able to live with something like that though.
So once I plug everything in and say I did manage to take it to a dyno, how exactly do you know how to "switch things around" such as fuel maps etc..
I read a bit of that manual already and saw 2 graphs. Now I guess a good tuned engine should have a very smooth linear line, is this correct?
So say I run the engine and have a very crappy line that’s all over the place. Would i just take the mouse on my laptop and "play with the line" and smooth it out as possible. Then the E6K or E6X would see these changes and adjust accordingly?
I am not sure if that’s right but from what I have read that seems to be the way you adjust maps etc..

download the soft-ware for the e6k (dos Based) or the soft-ware for the E6X windows based.
I didn't like the windows software at first because it wasn't as visual, but now that i got used to it... I really like it.
Just download the software and play with if download some maps that are avaialable and just check them out see what the differences are... you will get the idea.

Thanks jreynish... Played around with it for about 20mins... Looks pretty easy to change stuff and what not..
Where can i find some maps that are already setup? I cannot seem to find any on Haltech downloads section..
EDIT: NM i found some..

Yes you want a smooth curve. But it's not just a matter of making a straight line between two points. I think your going to need to see the system in action to really grasp what's happening. The key to remember is that the fundamental principles of EFI all apply, the Haltech is just your tool for putting those principles into action. You'd be well advised to search this forum an others for info on and theory's about EFI.
