Which laptop should i get?

I'm wondering which laptops you guys are using with your haltech programs? I can't get online with my Compaq presario w/windows millinium edition (ME).
Please help me out, i'm dying to fire up my engine...It's been about six months. Which laptops should i get?

Just get a used one from one of the online vendors... Make sure it has a floppy drive and Win 98.

If you paid more than $400, you paid too much.

Good luck!

avoid compaq's if possible they often have a problem with their BIOS? which leads to problems comunicating with the com port when in DOS mode.

rice,

I read this and your older thread. I believe you can use your existing laptop for the software. Are you using the laptop for anything else right now?

If not, find a geeky friend of yours, tell him to reformat the hard drive, fdisk you 1 big partition, and then install DOS only (no windows) on your computer. He should look at you very funny. Tell you you are crazy, then say ok. He'll dig out 5 or 6 floppies (dos 6.22 no doubt), reformat your computer, and load dos. Then have him install the haltech software. have him put it in the autoexec.bat, too, so it starts everytime you turn on the computer.

your laptop will be useless for anything but running the ecu. but it will work.

Now if you need to be a computer user, I recommend taking a class at the CC that will show you how to use windows appropriately. you should have no problem using a dos only program in win98se, but may in winme.

unfortunately this is information that forum boards are not a good medium for. Computer use, just like cars, are more feel of what is right to do, rather than 24 steps to program use, which doesn't really allow for variation.

My Comcrap presario, i use for surfing the net. After about 2 weeks of trying to install the Hatech program i gave up and just got a used ($200ish) Toshiba Libretto mini notebook off ebay. It just came in today and is tiny (about the size of a video tape)...i loaded the Hatech program with no problem but I still need to test to see if it works online. It should cause i get the RECONNECT HALTECH meassge, when i try to use the online mode with out the 9pin connector hooked up. When i tried to do this with my Compaq it just locks up and freezes...

tomorrow's gonna be fun, i hope.....?

Just get some old cheap laptop used. ME sucks, and XP has no DOS... All you need is a floppy and a port! I got mine free from a lady who was going to toss it (Toshiba) because it was so old. I wiped the drive and just loaded DOS. Well, later I added 98 but ill probably take it back off.
