Hi all, I am new to the whole stand alone ECU thing. But not new to playing with RX.
Have been researching into all the different brands for about 2 months now, and looks like Haltech is what I would prefer. I like their most straight forward and user friendly tuning program.
It does look like that most people run E6K or E6X.
My question is what's the difference between those and the Platinum 500/1000/2000?
I have a boosted S4 NA 13B.
What I need the ECU to do for me are the following:
1. fuel
2. ignition, advance or retard electronically would be nice
3. wide band o2
4. electric fan control using coolant or oil temp
5. boost control
6. data log
Based on that, what are you guys' thoughts on which Haltech ECU to go for?

I recommend the Sport1000.
Sprint500 is piston only, and SprintRE only does logging to laptop, and generic duty output for boost control (not closed loop), and doesn't do metering pump control.
Sport1000 does all of that and on-board logging. If you needed extra in/out for logging or whatever, then go for the Sport2000.

Honestly, avoid the E6X. It's history of trigger issues is well documented. The Sprint and Sport series ECUs use a newer version of the reluctor adapter that is much improved. The software, as well, helps improve trigger response.
If budget is a concern, the Sprint RE will do everything you want. The data logging feature of the Sprint RE requires the laptop to be connected, just like the E6X. The boost control function of the Sprint RE is open loop, just like the E6X. The one downside of the Sprint ECUs is there lack of high current injector drivers. You will need to either use injectors of >8 ohms resistance or resistors with low ohm injectors. If you're starting a build from scratch, there are some very good high ohm injectors available now from the likes of injector dynamics.
If you would like to have on board logging, closed loop boost control, and more options for configuring inputs and outputs, then the Sport 1000 or 2000 is where you'll need to look.

1. MSD, either LS1 coils or the 6A setup (diagrams supplied in sticky thread)
This should improve performance quiet a bit over the stock ignition system if I researched correctly, and the PS1000 is capable to control it. Correct me if I am wrong.

2. Knock control, the old engine died probably due to knocking on a hot summer day. So this is a must. I think I read that the PS1000 has built in knock control function, I am simply using up 1 channel on the PS1000 to control knock. Right?
I think this is all the questions I need answered before I buy

- PS1000 with long flying lead
- 4x LS1 MSD coils OR 3x MSD 6A
- What else ?

1. Ls-1 coils will be fine to a point. A 6a setup requires 2 boxes and coils for direct fire on leading. I would suggest IGN-1A coils. Your HP goals well tell you which way to go. Standard cheap Ls-1 coils will be fine for 400 hp or less.
2. Knock control is not something the sport 1000 is setup for. Its not needed either if you are tuned properly.

so for the 6A setup
i'd need to buy 2x 6A or 6AL boxes
then 4 coils from MSD?
any diagrams for that setup with the PS1000?
it'd help with understanding it alot

No 2 boxes for leading only there is no need to for CDI on the trailing. First what are you horsepower goals as the simplest setup is best and that would be the std ls coils if you don't plan on pushing major horsepower.
What kind of power are you looking to make? What fuel? What boost level? That will answer your questions on what ignition will work for you. The various setups run the gamut in cost, complexity, and suitability for your intended use.
