E6x running on windows 7 32bit- com port issue. calling win OS system gurus.

Finally got around to replacing the old lap top since i found out window 7 could install the e6x sofware without an issue as long as it was the 32bit. It could be installed on win7 64bit but you have to be a computer guru, which I am not.

Lap top originally had windows 8 but we loaded windows 7 32bit. I had a buddy help and we got all the drivers installed and everything, or almost everything, is working fine. The issue is we didnt have the com port showing up. Com & ltp was not in the device manager. So we researched and found out you can create it using the "action" tab on device manager. We created it but now the communicatin port has a yellow triangle with exclamation point. It gives code 34 iirc.

Anyone have any pointers? Ive invested over 10hrs this weekend.

You likely have to load the Chipset drivers for Win 7 32 bit from the MB manufacturer. Win 7 has generic drivers but the may not always have ALL of the drivers necessary.

Also, make sure that the Com Port is enabled in the Bios. < Check that first.

Edit: What is your MB model? You can find info by installing System Information Windows ( Free ) :

It is enabled in bios.

MB? Its an acer spire model e1-510. I could most likely find that chipset win 7 32 bit in the official acer website and find a previous model with the win 7 chipset to dl the driver directly from acer

Error 34 says that the device ( in this case Com port ) needs to be Manually configured. Have you checked properties of device in Device Manager. You may have to change the Com Port or IRQ settings that it uses. Usually not needed in Win 7, but I've seen stranger things.

I'd advise using a serial to USB adapter. I had no luck getting my E11 online with a serial port, but as soon as I wnet to a serial to USB adapter it worked right away.

^ Linky no worky.... and links to a very " iffy " site that wants you to download a Mobile App. Highly suspicious.

OP: Just checked Acer site, and they did not have any compatible chipset drivers for Windows 7 32 bit for your model. No wonder you're getting error messages.

Personally, there is no way I would downgrade a 64 bit OS to 32 bit just to run an old program. You can cause a lot of issues with your laptop. There are much better solutions available.

You'd probably be better off buying an old Laptop and using WinXP on it ( Still a fine OS... ) or using your Acer E1-510 with Win 8.1 64 bit. Early versions of Halwin can be made to run on Win7, 8.0/8.1 or even Windows 10 64 bit. Lots of info out there on how. Usually involves running on a Virtual PC or by using Dos Box.

You can pick up old Laptops for under $100. Sometimes even free!! No big loss if you leave them on the roof and drive away.

I have a Dell Latitude D630 which a good friend gave to me for free. Loaded up with XP Pro 32 bit and it's my go to machine for engine diagnostics. Will run anything I throw at it... even old DOS programs.

I just got rid of my old lap top.for this 2 year old acer i got for 80$. My old lap top had a dead battery and it took.minuted for haltech to conenct to laptop. Load very slowly to 100%.
This "new" laptop,s primary purpose is to tune.

Originally i wanted dual OS of win7 64bit and win xp. But win xp wouldnt install. Round 2 was trying virtual pc but i couldnt get it to.connect. haltech said com.port.in use for all of them.
Im desperate to just connect to haltech....

PM sent.

Have you gone into Device Manager and seen if you can manually change the Com Port for the serial port? Right click the Com Port, choose Properties, go to the Advanced Tab and look for a free come Port. #2 or #4 are usually free.

Also, you may be able to free up a COM port in the Bios. Open Bios and see if you can turn disable the 1394 Port (Firewire never used ) or LPT1 Port ( parallel printer port )

If you want to do a remote session with Teamviewer can you make sure that you have good Internet access for your laptop? A wired connection via Ethernet is best. Wireless is too slow.

Get your laptop all set up and running on the Internet first please. Saves a bunch of time.

I've been playing around with HalWinX 1.26 on my Windows 7 64 bit machine for a while. The solution that Claudio came up with works excellant and is so easy.

For OP, here is direct link to full Download program to run HalWinX 1.26 on 64 bit machines. Works a treat!!

A special thanks to Claudio for mentioning the Setup32 program. I may be able to run some old 16 bit engine simulation programs that wouldn't run on 64 bit computers. Not to mention some old games that I haven't been able to play in ages!!
