Will these require at least 17" rims?
Also, would it be too late to get on the GB once you guys finish making the rears?
Have you guys reached a price point yet?

I saw these at VIR on John's and Dan's car as well as an uninstalled set. I also spoke to John a good bit about the kit. I also rode in John's passenger seat a good bit as well. I forgot he was an ME. It's really nice to have some one(as are a few others) who truly knows what they are doing making products for the FD. It is a really really nice kit.

RotorMotor- You just spit out some very basic technical information. The brake piston size is not proprietary. It's a necessary spec to be able to size your brake system. The reason Fritz asked is because he knows what works and what doesn't If someone asked for the mounting bracket or rotor hat design specs... that would be proprietary.

Yes, yes, and yes

17" rims ARE required for our AP Competition brake kit (and nearly every other standard BBK out there). The good news is however that our street kit (not yet released, based off different rotors and calipers) WILL work with 16" wheels. We were amazed to find this out and didn't think there was any way they would fit, but they clear (just barely).

Yes, this GB will be open for one month at an introductory price, and will subsequently return to retail pricing after the month is up. Our rear brake setup won't be ready till after that point, however I'm sure we'll do an introductory GB on that as well (assuming there is enough interest).

We've done our best to keep prices as low as possible for this brake setup.

Retail will be $2850
Introductory GB pricing will be $2350

We've sold a handful of "pre-sale" sets already to members who just HAD to have this immediately for their cars, and asked us for prototypes before hand... but our final production run is ready to go so we're working to open up the official group buy as soon as tomorrow . We will post the Official GB link in this thread as soon as it is up and running.

Here's how it is going to run:

  • Members will submit GB payment's via our website, which will be linked in the GB thread with instructions.
  • The group buy will run for ONE MONTH. The GB product page will automatically disappear after the one month counter is up, though the brakes may still be purchased at retail pricing after that point.
  • Payment can be submitted in FULL ($2350 + shipping) or DEPOSIT (of $1500)
  • Final payment for deposits must be submitted BEFORE the 1 month GB close. Late payments will be subject to an additional $100 late fee (we've had members of GB's in the past drag their feet for months before submitting their final payments which have delayed shipping for the rest of the GB members and complicated things for us... the late fee should help avoid that)
  • The GB will be divided into two shipping groups, so that members who pay in full and early can receive their brakes without additional delays. We will place the initial caliper and rotor order for every member who is paid at the two week mark (should be another week or less for us to receive the parts, and then ship the kits). Any GB members completing deposits or paying in full after that time period will wait until the official GB close (1 month) at which point we'll place an order for the remainder of parts and ship the next week.
  • Group 1 should have their kits on the way to them 3 weeks into the GB, and group 2 should have their kits on the way at 5 weeks.

No, it will be a completely proprietary setup. The rotor sizes needed aren't made by any manufacturer as an "off the shelf" part

Arrow Recent Track Review

We wanted to share an email we just received from one of our pre-sale customers, with comments after testing our AP Competition Braking Kit. He approached us asking to purchase an early production version of the setup for an upcoming track day to replace his current setup.

Customer:
Jim M., Instructor at BIR Performance Driving School

Posted at:
Email

Review:

In summary, I am very pleased with the brakes. I love the way the pads go in – pad changes are going to be 5 minutes and no headaches! The protection around the bleed screws is appreciated for risk mitigation but is a bit of a PITA when bleeding. I was using a vacuum bleeder and it was tough to keep a box-end on the outer screw and get any range of motion for loosening/tightening.

Track-use:

Driver: Jim M., Instructor at BIR Performance Driving School
Date: Monday, 18 June, 2012. Minnesota
Location: BIR (short) Competition Road Course – 13 turns, 2.5 miles
Conditions: 80f Ambient, Partly sunny
Car: 1993 Rx-7 R1 Track-Only car, 13B motor by Chris Ott of Rotary Performance, Efini twins, Maval manual steering, A/C delete, air pump delete, etc…
Tires: all 4 corners – Hoosier R6, 285-30R18 mounted on 18×10 CCW Classics, 7.5” BS (4th track day on these tires…almost shot)
Front Brakes: SakeBomb/AP Caliper & Rotor kit, Hawk DTC-70 pads, Fully vented with custom backing plates
Rear Brakes: Racing Brake RX-7 Rear BBK 2-peice rotors with stock calipers on extended brackets. Hawk DTC-60 pads
Motul RBF-600 brake fluid (flushed/changed at least 1x per year)
No other changes in the brake system (stock master cylinder)
At the last minute I decided to take the pad compound up a notch (don’t ask me why) and I tested DTC-70 instead of the DTC-60. Bedding in was a bit scary – I did it on the track during hot lapping on my “wet” tires which are street tires (my ABS is not working and I didn’t want to flat-spot my track tires). The corner workers thought I was nuts. I drove four 20-minute sessions in the afternoon:

Impressions:

Excellent component design and workmanship: a step up from the RacingBrake solution.
Install was straightforward, easy, and quick (except for the stupid brake line clips)
Excellent feel pedal feel/travel: if anything, less pedal travel than before (Stock calipers, RacingBrake 2-piece rotors & Hawk DTC-60 pads up front)
No fade, very predictable braking force
TONS of brakes…
The Hawk pads were squeaky and dirty. Did I say I had TONS of brakes?
Rotors and pads stood up very well – no signs of cracking or hot spots.
Overall I am very happy with this kit and my new front brake platform. I can now stop worrying about rotors, etc and start fiddling around with bias, other pads, etc.

We're nearly there... but for now here's the link to the GB (we still have to tweak the page a bit but it's at least functional for now). We'll also introduce this GB in another official GB thread tomorrow and we'll continue answering questions etc. in that thread. Thanks everyone for your interest in this kit. We wouldn't be able to make this stuff happen without support from our friends and customers in the FD community so thank you for helping us keep the FD3S platform competitive!

Just a heads up, we have a limit of 15 spots in the current group buy, and they are first come first serve.

It uses the same caliper and rotor ring if that's what you mean by identical. The rotor hats, caliper brackets and brake lines were custom designed by us, specifically for the FD.

We are working on getting our setup listed on their site actually. No need to sell them our design

^Yeah I think in the struggle to sell parts, companies (and customers) got really wrapped up in the "bigger is better" mentality and forgot about efficiency. From an engineering perspective, AP is light years beyond most of the big brake kit companies out there (and especially for their race line of products)
