Talking GB: FD Competition Brake System - SBG

Ladies and Gentlemen, after months of testing and development
we are proud to officially bring you our competition brake system!

Our goal for this braking system was to shatter the performance limitations offered by most of the current braking solutions on the market, while reigning in the cost associated with stepping up to a true out of the box competition-ready brake kit. We chose to engineer our brake setup around AP racing components based on their continued success in top tier motorsports such as the American Le Mans series, Grand-Am, NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide Series, and Formula 1.

The upfront cost of a brake package is not the only factor when deciding on a upgraded brake solution. The cost of replacement parts such as pads and rotor rings must also be factored into the equation. Fortunately the caliper we utilized has a very common pad shape, which translates into a potential $100+ savings as compared to average pad replacement costs. The AP CP8350 caliper also accepts 20mm pads which are significantly thicker than most setups, further adding to the reduced pad replacement cost and frequency. Combine the reduced pad costs with the long service life of the AP J-Hook rotors, and over the course of a few seasons, and this setup can potentially pay for itself in savings alone. Cheaper maintenance costs, better performance, race quality components... no brainer.

Our Brake Package Includes:
  • Two AP CP8350 Forged Aluminum Calipers
  • Two AP 325x32mm J-Hook Rotors
  • Custom hard anodized bells (hats) in 2024 aluminum, with mounting bobbins
  • Custom hard anodized caliper mounting bracket in 6061 aluminum, with hardware
  • DOT approved stainless steel brake lines, with abrasion/dirt resistant sleeve
  • Installation instructions
  • Brake pads are NOT included*

*Brake pads for this caliper are readily available from nearly every pad manufacturer. As pad choice varies greatly depending on personal preference, application, and desired cost, we decided not to include pads to reduce the total cost as one pad obviously does not fit all. To see a list of commonly used pads please visit the following Link . We are able to source many other pads such as Performance Friction and Endless. We will be stocking various Endless pad compounds in the near future.

We have made custom hard anodized aluminum rotor hats, caliper brackets and brake lines creating a complete bolt on kit. The caliper we include with the kit is a true motorsports grade caliper (originally a rally caliper). We designed this kit to be used for primarily race use only IE: Competitive racing, track days, time attack, hill climbs, etc.

The AP calipers used in our system allows 20mm thick pads, which not only add additional thermal barrier between the rotor and caliper, but they will also last longer then a standard competition brake pad. Many other calipers use pads that are 12-17mm’s thick resulting in reduced thermal insulation (potentially more brake fluid boiling), and significantly increased pad replacement intervals. Caliper tech specs and piston sizing can be found in the link below.

AP CP8350 Calipers Specs & Benefits:
  • Stainless steel pistons
  • Anti-knockback springs
  • Forged aluminum caliper construction weighs (AP’s street caliper line uses cast aluminum calipers)
  • Light weight (about 4 lbs)
  • Integrated bleed screw and crossover tube protection
  • Durable hard anodized finish
  • Common pad shape (readily available pads from various manufactures)
  • Calipers can be professionally serviced by Essex Parts Services (Exclusive Importer of AP Racing Motorsports products).
  • A complete spec sheet and more information on the AP CP8350 calipers can be found here.

The AP 325mm J-hook rotor rings that are supplied with this kit directly come from AP’s motorsports line of iron brake discs. The J-Hook slot pattern is AP’s latest, most aggressive slot pattern available. These discs are similar to the discs being purchased by the top teams in various motorsports categories around the world.
AP Racing's Heavy Duty J Hook Racing Discs are specifically designed to handle race abuse. They provide increased cooling, less judder, fewer cracks, and an increased service life vs. competing discs. When you run an AP disc, you can be confident that you're using the best parts available at any price point.

“Most aftermarket discs have 30 to 48 vanes. Many times those vanes are straight, or non-directional, with a sub-optimal amount of space between disc faces. After extensive CFD and thermal stress analysis, AP designed the Heavy Duty J-Hook with 70 vanes and a wide 16.5mm air gap to increase airspeed and heat transfer, while reducing deflection and remaining reasonably lightweight.”

“The increased directional vane count on the J Hook Heavy Duty Disc amplifies air speed through the disc, reduces air recirculation between vents, and also increases convective heat transfer and heat distribution. In other words, both air and heat move more quickly and evenly through the disc, creating increased stability under the extreme loads of racetrack use. The disc is less prone to coning, distortion, and cracking, while providing cooler running temperatures, less brake fade, reduced judder, and a longer service life.”

AP CP3908 J-Hook Rotor Specs & Benefits:
  • Industry/competition race standard rotors
  • 70 directional vanes heavy duty design, 16.5mm air gap
  • True floating rotor design to allow axial float and radial heat expansion of the disc
  • Floating rotor also reduces stress and fatigue on the brake hats
  • Components in this kit are from AP’s competition product line (these are NOT “street” components)
  • 50 years of brake engineering experience are in these rotors and calipers
  • AP J Hook discs can be found on 75% or more of the NASCAR Sprint Cup grid, and AP components are supplied to most top teams in Grand-Am, ALMS, BTCC, WTCC, and Super GT.
  • AP’s proprietary gray iron alloy with extreme temperature and wear durability
  • AP’s exclusive J Hook design to promote even heat distribution and reducing cracking, as well as increased leading edge surface area for increased initial “bite” compared to standard slotted rotors.
  • Longer service life means less time and money spent swapping rotor rings.

Hands down, these rotors are one of the best competition rotors money can buy. This brake package developed by SakeBomb Garage is a complete out-of-the-box competition racing package, with no cost spared on components.

As most of you know we are also working on a rear brake solution. When the rear brake kit is complete we will offer a special rate to anyone who participates in this sale.

NOTE: 17" aftermarket rims are required. This brake kit will not work the the stock 16" rims (or any other rim smaller than 17".

* We've had members of GB's in the past drag their feet for months before submitting their final payments which have delayed shipping for the rest of the GB members and complicated things for us - We hope the late fee will help avoid that.

**While we have tested this front brake setup to work well with the stock rear brakes, additional braking performance can be achieved with the use of upgraded rotors such as 99 spec, and Racing Brake brand rears. We are currently developing our own rear brake solution which we feel will completely maximize the braking potential of the FD, as well as pair extraordinarily well with our AP Competition Brake package however we are still a few months out on release of our setup. While we recommend our rear brake setup to optimize total braking performance, current users of Racing Brake or 99 spec rears may continue to use these rear setups to their advantage. Stock rear calipers do perform well with this kit, however depending on your tire compound and width, may benefit from increased μ (coefficient of friction) rear pads.

IMPORTANT GROUP BUY INFORMATION:

This group buy will run for exactly one month, ending on 07/20/12 at 10PM-EST. The GB product page will automatically disappear after the one month counter is up, though the brakes may still be purchased at retail pricing after that point. We are limiting the number of brake kits available at group-buy pricing to 15 sets, and will be sold on a first come first serve basis.

Payment can be submitted via our website, in "FULL" ($2350 + shipping) or "DEPOSIT" (of $1500 + shipping).

Final payment for "DEPOSIT" option must be submitted BEFORE the close of the group buy on 07/20/12 at 10PM-EST. *Late payments will be subject to an additional $100 late fee

The GB will be divided into two shipping groups, so that members who pay in full and early can receive their brakes without additional delays. We will place the initial caliper and rotor order for every member who is paid at the two-week mark (should be another week or less for us to receive the parts, and then ship the kits). Any GB members completing deposits or paying in full after that time period will wait until the official GB close (1 month from opening) at which point we'll place an order for the remainder of parts and ship the next week.

Group 1 should have their kits on the way to them 3 weeks into the GB, and Group 2 should have their kits on the way at 5 week mark.

How To Purchase:

Follow this link --->>> *CLICK HERE*
Select any options, and proceed to check out. That's it!

You can also check out our Current Active Specials/Group buys

Additional Info:

This group buy is limited to a total of 15 brake kits, and is first come first serve. This GB will run for one month (see counter on product page) before the page automatically disappears from the website.

Please reference the link above to select any options you may want and submit payment. If you have any other questions, feel free to either post them in this thread, PM us directly or email us at sakebombgarage@gmail.com

Thanks for your continued support,

jhnrx7's car at VIR after a 3 day event

AP J-Hook rotors on the Risi Competizione F430 GT car

A review from one of our beta testers:

Customer:
Jim M. Instructor at BIR Performance Driving School

Review:

In summary, I am very pleased with the brakes. I love the way the pads go in – pad changes are going to be 5 minutes and no headaches! The protection around the bleed screws is appreciated for risk mitigation but is a bit of a PITA when bleeding. I was using a vacuum bleeder and it was tough to keep a box-end on the outer screw and get any range of motion for loosening/tightening.

Track-use:
  • Driver: Jim M. Instructor at BIR Performance Driving School
  • Date: Monday, 18 June, 2012. Minnesota
  • Location: BIR (short) Competition Road Course – 13 turns, 2.5 miles
  • Conditions: 80f Ambient, Partly sunny
  • Car: 1993 Rx-7 R1 Track-Only car, 13B motor by Chris Ott of Rotary Performance, Efini twins, Maval manual steering, A/C delete, air pump delete, etc…
  • Tires: all 4 corners – Hoosier R6, 285-30R18 mounted on 18×10 CCW Classics, 7.5” BS (4th track day on these tires…almost shot)
  • Front Brakes: SakeBomb/AP Caliper & Rotor kit, Hawk DTC-70 pads, Fully vented with custom backing plates
  • Rear Brakes: Racing Brake RX-7 Rear BBK 2-peice rotors with stock calipers on extended brackets. Hawk DTC-60 pads
  • Motul RBF-600 brake fluid (flushed/changed at least 1x per year)
  • No other changes in the brake system (stock master cylinder)
At the last minute I decided to take the pad compound up a notch (don’t ask me why) and I tested DTC-70 instead of the DTC-60. Bedding in was a bit scary – I did it on the track during hot lapping on my “wet” tires which are street tires (my ABS is not working and I didn’t want to flat-spot my track tires). The corner workers thought I was nuts. I drove four 20-minute sessions in the afternoon:

Impressions:
  • Excellent component design and workmanship: a step up from the RacingBrake solution.
  • Install was straightforward, easy, and quick (except for the stupid brake line clips)
  • Excellent feel pedal feel/travel: if anything, less pedal travel than before (Stock calipers, RacingBrake 2-piece rotors & Hawk DTC-60 pads up front)
  • No fade, very predictable braking force
  • TONS of brakes…
  • The Hawk pads were squeaky and dirty. Did I say I had TONS of brakes?
  • Rotors and pads stood up very well – no signs of cracking or hot spots.
Overall I am very happy with this kit and my new front brake platform. I can now stop worrying about rotors, etc and start fiddling around with bias, other pads, etc.

Exclamation Payments....

eek... we've got payments rolling in pretty fast BUT from many people that weren't on the original list . That's completely fine by us, however I wanted to give everyone that is actually on the interest list a heads up that there is a LIMITED QUANTITY FIRST COME FIRST SERVE so once the spots are sold that's it.

I know this is a large purchase and it does take some time to scrape money together and or sell organs So not to rush anyone, but if you were on the interest list and you actually want these we need some form of payment to hold them, otherwise it's fair game for anyone else interested.

No for some reason that feature is not working on the site, it's still stuck at a static 15. We'll try to get it working but something about the GB listing being redirected from the main listing is causing an error with the stocking feature. Sorry the website is pretty new, and I'm not well versed with it's inner workings.

At the moment though, it's not a correct gauge of quantity so don't rely on it. I can say that to date we've had 6 payments come in. The GB is available to anyone with an FD and a computer pretty much, but we only posted it over here so probably other forum members.

i know it may be asking A LOT but is it possible for someone to post from SBG the same feature as to how many remain so that members can keep track...
So if we have to go out on the corner and sell services to make this purchase possible... lol

Thank you, and we can't do it without you guys. Once the funding for R/D dries up, so do the parts (from us at least). We really haven't made a profit off of SakeBomb to date... it's all be reinvested back into R/D for new parts, which is why the FD community is such an integral part to continuing development No one's getting rich off of a handful of parts sales for the FD I can assure you

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up we're at *9* sets sold with 3-4 more people who are working on gathering funds to submit payments (from outside the GB list). We're also getting near the halfway point so we'll be placing orders for more rings/calipers this week and pack/ship to paid customers who have made the halfway cutoff. If you want these shipped in that block please submit your order no later than Tuesday at noon (eastern).

Thanks everyone.

**Three Days Left*** for $400 off on the brakes, with *4* spots left open!

To order please visit the GB section of our website. After the GB close these brakes will be available for $2750.00 on our website. Please be aware this is a one time only deal for the initial product release, and is very close to cost. GB members will also receive a discount offer on our rear brake setup (as they are not available quite yet). We will not be discounting them like this in the future (to answer all the PM's we've received).

Thank you for your interest everyone! Once our current GB members have these on their car I think it will be evident how great of a brake kit this really is, and how ridiculous this initial GB offering price is (which we're just doing to recoup some of the development costs). Our current feedback from pre-release testers is that (at least from our initial test pool) this is THE BEST KIT they've used on their FD's to date! We were hoping to rank toward the top but were thrilled with the highest praise and kind words we've received. This kit has surpassed even our own expectations even after knowing how it *should* perform on paper.

Thanks again, and happy tracking .

Update:

Ok guys sorry for the delays since the order was so large it took our supplier a few days to get the order together and shipped. We're hoping to get most of the first groups orders shipped in the next few days.

Not to purposefully revive an old thread but I feel this is possibly the right place to do it,

So I know y'all are busy with the headlights which I appreciate, and I'm sure other things like the footrest and what not, buuuut in all your busyness can you let us know the status of the rear brake setup sakebomb had mentioned they would be developing?

Super interested I know the rs/rz setup or the racing brake kit is a good alternative but I would really like to see what sbg comes up with as a matching set to complement the ap racing front brake kit
