What's the lead time on this kit?

 

Sounds good Dan, I'll order this whenever i get some cash back in the bank after paying the IRS another 5 grand. I havnt raced at NJMP with the FD, the pics of my car on track were from Gateway Raceway in STL. Fun track, but was still learning the car, first time ever driving the car at speed. Coming from a 650hp 2 ton AWD car with the brakes and tires to match, it was a steep learning curve.

finally got to do some testing.

I set the dwell as per the instructions.

That did not work well - my FD would not rev past 4200 RPM, ignition sounded broken up.

Checked the settings, they matched what is recommended.

So, I put the dwell back to stock.

Better, but not good.

I can only get to about 6500-7000 RPM under boost.

There simply is not much power either.

A sharp turn in 2nd gear and I cannot break the rear tires loose.

Normally the problem is keeping the rear tires planted.

My car is a single turbo, was running stock coils with an HKS Twinpower

There were no issues with it prior to changing to the AEM coil kit.
Just 3 weeks ago the car was run at an autox without any problems,
and no other changes have been made under the hood.

As changing back to the stock dwell settings made an improvement,
it would seem the dwell settings are key.

The problem is I have no idea how to set them, or where to start.

When comparing them to stock the following is quite noticeable.

Stock dwell: Dwell increases with higher RPM
AEM Recommended Dwell. Dwell decreases with higher RPM

Further recommendation?

Is your RHD coil bracket done yet?

 

Well we've got some internal debate going regarding whether or not we'd be able to break even on a production run of these. Since a production run large enough to lower the cost to something reasonable will require quite a number of brackets machined, we're not sure whether we'd actually sell enough of them to break even. I think we need a list of committed customers to show the viability of a production run of them. The bracket design is pretty much finalized, and plug wire and adapter harness lengths would just need a few quick tweaks.

The mounts alone will end up being more than our welded cruise location mount (still available here -> AEM/Mercury Marine Coil mount - SakeBomb Garage or full kit here Complete FD3S AEM Coil Upgrade Package - SakeBomb Garage) but definitely under $160 for the whole bracket setup. Then there's the coils, wires, and mil spec PnP harness to actually get it all into you car and running.

how would these be installed? where? drilling required?

 

We currently offer a coil package that locates the coils on the drivers side frame rail where the cruise control would go (check link below).

RX-7 FD3S - Ignition - SakeBomb Garage

The universal mounts (pictured above) are complete but haven't produced them yet due to lack of interest. The universal mounts can be mounted pretty much anywhere with either an adapter bracket or bolting it to exiting holes in the engine bay.

great item I too soon will have to order this for my car. seems like Im starting to get ignition break up on my rx7.

 

Just some (delayed) feedback on my AEM coil install:

No official dyno results yet, just butt dyno.
My FD is not a street car, and I hadn't had a chance to test it until this week.

After a couple of autox's I can say that it seems to be working quite well.

I'm not feeling any hesitation across the RPM range: 8900 in 1st (fuel cut-need shift light), and 2nd feels good as well.
Don't know what the RPM was in 2nd, it was hard enough to sneak a look at 1st to ensure I was hitting fuel cut and not ignition break up.

Any more than that will require some dyno time.

 

CAN they be produced for the few of us that want them? or you need a large order? I want to keep my CC!!

 

Installed the coils on my JDM FD. I haven't done more than started as the entire car was painted with a company design.

Wiper motor has to be removed to mount the coils in the current designed location. As soon as my car is back together, I am going to see where I can relocate the coils to, but I don't use my wipers anyway so it's not a big deal to me.

I don't have cruise control and my abs is deleted so I have some other locations that might work but won't know for sure until next week when I return from a business trip.

Car did idle very smoothly, but I can't give praise just to the coils as the motor was rebuilt prior to the install.

While there isnt enough interest to do a full production run, on request of a few forum members I just spoke with our machine shop about a limited run of a handful of pieces. They agreed to do a small run however the cost per piece obviously went up tremendously. For a limited run with hardware, spacers, anodizing etc we'd be at around $150 for the pair of mounts for a 13b and +$50-75 for a set for a 20b. Since we'd only be doing a handful of pieces it's not really feasable for us to produce the small sheet metal portion, however the sheet metal portion could be fabbed up quite easily with a few components from the hardware store. Our universal coil mounts are extremely versatile allowing you to mount coils by stacking them, bolting a pair together side by side, bolting them into a "block" back to back, and allow the entire assembly to be mounted using threaded side mounts or passthrough holes to bolt up to a flat firewall.

I know it's way outside the ballpark we had talked about originally but I thought I'd mention it incase anyone was still interested. Payments will be required upfront and we'll have the usual wait time for machining and finishing.

We can also do custom wire lengths with your orders for the same price as our current AEM spark plug leads, and the PnP coil harness has enough slack to reach other locations as well (it's configured with a jumper to run either waste spark or direct fire depending on your ECU configuration).

 

Finally drove my car home today. Coil adjustment done for PFC and tuning tomorrow afternoon.

Engine has also just been rebuilt so won't know power improvements but will be able to comment on the curve smoothness after the tune.

Using the USDM setup, I had to remove my windshield wiper motor. Not sure if I will relocate the coils or just kiss the wipers goodbye.
