AEM coil upgrade package preview/interest

New Product: AEM / Mercury Marine Coil upgrade package
Preview/Interest

The AEM/MM coils are a must have for high horsepower FD's. Originally designed great alternative to the factory coils and HKS twin power combination. The issue most will face when upgrading to the marine coils is wiring them up and finding a location to mount them. We have designed a complete package for anyone looking for a completely bolt on mounting solution. We will offer components as a complete package at a discount, or individually for customers who don't need a complete package. We are still finalizing pricing so please bare with us. Feel free to post any questions, comments or interest in this thread!

AEM/Mercury Marine Coils

As we all know rotary ignition events occur much like those of a 2 stroke engine, with two firing events per revolution. This means an ignition coil has to fire twice as often as a standard piston engine coil. Coupled with the high RPM's of the rotary engine, many of the current high output coils (MSD, LS, etc) can not keep up with the more than doubled firing rate as their dwell time is longer and as a result lag. The AEM/MM coils are the best available for a high horsepower FD application. As they are a smart coil they do not require an igniter, only a signal to fire, simplifying their setup. These coils can be adapted to work on the Power FC as well as most any aftermarket ECU. These are the coil-of-choice for making serious and reliable power on the FD.

Current solutions such as the HKS Twin power attempt to solve the problem by bolstering the signal from the stock coils. Not only does this yield a less effective and more complex solution with a lesser spark, the cost is extraordinarily high and relies on your old stock coils. Our solution allows you to completely remove the stock coils under the manifold (along with the igniter) and feed a direct signal to the new coil pack.

the AEM / Mercury Marine coils are becoming increasingly popular as a coil of choice for many tuning communities (especially the FD) for it's high spark energy at low dwell time. These coils were originally designed for use in 2 stroke marine race motors, which require a high energy spark but fire twice as often as a standard piston engine requiring a very fast recharge rate.

Highlights:
  • Massive Spark Energy, up to 103 mJ
  • Incredibly long spark duration, up to 2.9mS
  • Up to 40kV Output Voltage, without using a CDI
  • Weather and Shockproof design
  • Maximum Current: 19 Amps
  • Maximum Battery Voltage: 17 Volts

AEM/MM Coil mounting kit

The mount we have designed, places the coils next to the brake master cylinder where the cruise control would reside (removal of cruise control required). As with most of our products the mount is completely bolt on and easily removable requiring no permanent modifications. It allows direct access to change plug wires, and as a side benefit you can remove your old coils from under the UIM  !

Plug Wires
To compliment the mount we are also offering accompanying MSD SuperConductor Spark plug wires, for a true plug-and-play coil solution!

Highlights
  • Completely bolt on
  • OEM appearance
  • Black powder coated steel mount
  • Stainless steel mounting hardware
  • Aluminum spacers included

Adapter harness

We are working on a harness that will offer a semi plug and play solution. It will require de-pinning the factory igniter connector and re-pinning it with a connector we provide. This package is as close to complete as we can possibly make it.

Custom SBG spark plug wires

To round out our package we offer custom made MSD spark plug wires specifically to work with our mounting solution (Custom lengths also available). Whether your car is stock or a 500HP monster these wires will suit your needs for plug wires, and meet or exceed your expectations. Our spark plug wires utilize MSD 8.5mm super conductor wires and the highest quality connectors and boots. MSD's 8.5mm Super Conductor wire sets feature a proprietary helically-wound core that has just 40-50 ohms of resistance per foot--but with an EMI/RFI suppression equal to a 1,500 ohm wire! What's that mean? More energy from your coils make it to your spark plug wires which would otherwise be converted to heat in a standard wire. Less resistance means less energy converted to heating the wire, resulting in a stronger spark and longer wire life. These are the best wires money can buy!

We stand behind these wires and individually test and record the ohm rating of each of your plug wires. Not only does this allow you to SEE the difference in your own wires compared to the others on the market, but also gives you a base-line reading to track the life of your wires over time. :icon_tup:

Highlights:
  • Excellent EMF suppression
  • Outstanding Silicone Insulator
  • Spec Sheet Provided
  • Ultra-Low resistance

Nice I made one for my FC and am gonna make another bracket for my buddies this would be much nicer to retro fit lot of people will like these

dabigesii 02-20-13 07:47 PM

I definitely would be interested in the mounting bracket and wires. What is the projected price for this?

+2 on the mounting bracket and wires

Flying_solo 02-21-13 12:25 PM

I've been interesting in going the AEM route and would be very interested in this GB when it becomes available. I too am curious on price so I may budget with the wifey.

We are aiming for around $75-85 for the bracket and the wires will be between $100-110. The wires will be significantly longer than the stock wires which is the reason for the price difference.

In for the bracket.

Have my interest! Great looking product as usual :icon_tup:

whiteweazel21 02-21-13 06:10 PM

P.S. What numbers are you looking at to greenlight production, and what is the time frame for production (if available)?

RotorMotor 02-21-13 06:21 PM

15+ people should be all we need to run these, and after having this up for only a day it's looking very promising. We could push this though quickly if there's enough interest, basically a couple weeks from taking payments to shipping kits. The only holdup should be powdercoating/anodizing for brackets and spacers though our new shop is pretty quick :)

Prôdigy2nd 02-21-13 07:02 PM

would you be willing to supply the coils to those who are RHD as that mount spot probably won't with our cars...

Cheers

Jon

FD_RICKY 02-22-13 01:34 AM

interested.

bdarepat 02-22-13 05:15 AM

Definitely interested, although mine is RHD also...

Definitely. All parts will be available piece meal or as a package. :icon_tup: So if you only want the mount for instance can order that individually.

If you'd like to talk about a RHD version please shoot us a PM, we've talked about it and it's a possibility. There are a few other decent mounting locations.

Is it possible to forgo this? Would it cut the price down at all?

AUS-FD3S 02-23-13 06:05 PM

Ok, so this would negate the need for me to purchase a HKS twin power, correct? and its plug and play, only thing needed is a place to mount the unit?
Whats the cost for the full kit? and how does it compar on specs to the HKS ignition pack, what kind of test have you done?

portugueserotary 02-23-13 06:59 PM

Interested, lets see how these turn out

Hi Im Simon 02-25-13 09:54 AM

interested in the bracket. I have the coils and a custom made harness already.

ryan1 02-25-13 09:58 AM

Absolutely, not only is this a FAR superior ignition system than anything the HKS add on for stock coils can produce, it's leaps and bounds more advanced from greater spark intensity at lower dwell time. It's also not relying on old FD coils/old igniter box, etc... this is a truly modernized FD ignition system for the 21st Century.

Our unit bolts up to the frame rail using existing mounting points, with custom ultra-low resistance plug wires available as plug-and-play for this setup. Cheaper, better, stronger - modernized ignition for the FD.

I would not be surprised to see the cost of used HKS twin powers drop as a result as they're basically rendered obsolete + overpriced with our smart coil setup  :icon_tup:

The coating will not raise the price significantly. If you'd like one uncoated we can do that but it won't change the price.
