And the stock gauge on the S5 RX-7 is useless. It has 3 settings: cold, normal, and overheated.
If you really want to know the temperature, you need to get another gauge, read from your EMS if that's an option, or measure the voltage at the ECT sensor.

Not sure if that's too hot, but your jeopardizing the health of the engine (apex seals). If the thermostat is working properly (and the factory one is the only one you want to use) then the items mentioned should be a focal point given that you don't have a blockage in the system. Not sure if a blockage would contribute to a hose blowing or not, but perhaps someone else could chime in.
The item w/the blue hose is the thermowax and this item has two nozzles thus only one nozzle, as seen in the pic, has a hose to it thus it is missing a hose. The nozzle which has no hose is the receiving side of the thermowax so that you only have the exit hose on is perplexing because that hose takes the coolant running through the thermowax and passes it through the system on its way back to the radiator and not the other way around.
