quite off to be a mazda tech....

he was probably refering to the MOP (metering oil pump), but it draws oil from your oil pan.

What years is your car?

I'd go ahead and say don't listen to the guy. A little smoke at startup is perfectly normal especially in colder climates.

How long does it smoke, how bad, what color, what does it smell like?

The oil jets have a pocket that is actually designed to drain down after shut-down. This lubricates and helps compression for start-up. If they were dry you would get the dreaded high whine and no start till the plugs are removed and a squirt of oil is added to each rotor.

needAgen3bad: Find your diagnostics box on the driver's side of your engine bay. Lift the cover, identify the terminals TEN and GND. Take a paper clip, short length of speaker wire....you get the idea, and bridge these two contacts together (with the key removed from the ignition of course). Get into your car and turn the key to the ON position, don't start it. If your car is throwing a code(s) it will flash them to you in morse code fashion.

Say you throw a code 55 for example, it will flash 5 long times and 5 short times shortly after. Do some research on the specific code(s) it's throwing and go from there.

As for startup smoke it is perfectly normal especially around 30 seconds long, and as for running rich how does your car tell you you're running "rich"?

Has your engine ever had synthetic oil in it? On of the last ones that I repaired had Mobil One in it , it smoked and the side seal orings had shrunk. They fell out of the rotors as they were removed!
