My 20B was shipped through R&L Carriers (R+L Carriers | Your Global Transportation Solution) for $400 from Boise, Idaho to their terminal in Wilmington, OH. That was with Residential Delivery added despite me picking it up at the terminal, so be sure to specify the proper delivery location in your quote.

This guide is pretty good, but I would have some reservations about shipping an engine on a bare pallet as illustrated. The best way I know of to pack an engine is to use a pallet and build a crate on top of it with 2x4s & plywood. Four 2x4s at the bottom around the circumference of the space in question, then four uprights along the corners and four more to form the upper ring will be sufficiently strong with 3 drywall screws at each joint. This will protect the contents much better than just being wrapped in plastic and any possible mishaps will clearly be visible in the form of damage to the crate rather than the engine. Busted up plywood is much harder to explain away than stretched plastic.
Strip the engine down to the shortblock and secure it to the pallet with some ratcheting tiedown straps. While you could theoretically just remove the oil pan, it is easier to pack things around a shortblock.
I think my crate was about 30"x30"x30" overall. This should give you enough room for the shortblock, exterior parts such as the UIM/LIM/etc and sufficient space to wrap everything in several layers of bubble wrap. For nuts & bolts, LABELED ziploc bags in a small box. Something I've found to be about perfect for this are the boxes that computer motherboards and video cards come in. Tape it shut, label it and toss it in the crate right on top.. Adding a packing list on the inside of the lid would be a good idea too. Seal up the whole thing with four drywall screws.
Minus the turbos & manifold (purchased separately) and A/C, P/S & their accessory bracket (reused from my S4), the fully-loaded crate weighed 380lbs.

i use Forwardair.com for air and freight. sometimes deliveries are overnight and rates cheaper than most others. rather oversize crates or even crates barely big enough to fit a short block into were nearly the same price, as well as weight of long block versus short block.
