Q. Mixing around the spark plug wires

My "friend" decide to play a prank on me a while ago before I knew much about RX-7s. He switched my spark plug wires without me knowing, and then later I tried starting it. After turning it over a few times I checked the wires and began trying random plugs in random places. Like I said, I knew nothing then. Eventually I got them in the right order and it never ran quite the same ever since.

Now it's dead because of a water jacket leak and radiator fluid is in the combustion chamber. My question is: Can switching spark plug wires around cause damage? I know it's okay in a piston engine but rotaries are quite different.
