Power steering squeel???

I replaced my power steering pump the other day because it was squeeling loud at the pully. I noticed that if I sprayed wd40 on the rear of the pully in went away for 5 seconds or so. I bougt a used on and put it on and it does the same thing. The belt is not visably glased or anything and the belt is tight, however I did put the old pully back on. Could a pully go bad? It looked OK when I had it off and the guys at AIM in Indy said it was a bad pump. I just find it hard to believe that both pumps were bad in the same way.

I would look into belt tension and the belt rather than the pulley again. Also, do you have enough of power steering fluid?

Throw your power steering and all it's accessories away. Problem solved and handling (feel) improved. +5hp!

What E6KT2 said. If your car is an RX-7, it's right around (or less than) 3000 lbs. No need for PS.

In addition, you'll lose about 40 lbs. off the car's front end.

Good luck,

Explain...

...How is the handling "feel" improved? I was considering removing my PS (the pump is off right now 'cause I just took out my A/C), but I really like the responsiveness of the steering. Convince me to take out my PS please =)... if it will sacrifice that feeling, don't bother, I'll put the ****** back on =)... thanks much

Your car weighs under 2800 lbs. No matter which first gen you have. Power steering is simply not needed. It draws belt power (parasitic off the engine), weighs down the car (the figure I have heard is that 50 lbs = .2 seconds in the 1/4 mile) and is the steering equivelent of a condom for sensitivity. I drive the heaviest 1st gen made, and steering is easy EXCEPT parallel parking.

So I don't take it where I need to parallel park, but not because of the steering. Because I'm afraid of some SUV backing over my hood. I have seen it happen at a Club event, right in front of 8 or so Club members!

I don't park where the general public is at all if I can help it.
