Oil sealleak?
I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this question, but if not, please don't flame too hard - I'm relatively new here.
I'm looking at a '93 TT, drove it briefly and it seemed to pull very nicely (i've driven 5 or 6 in the last few weeks). The current owner has some compression data that is apparently not too old (within the last 6 months or so), and 4 of the 6 readings were above 100 psi, the otehr two in the upper 90's. My question is, there were a few (not many) oil drips on the concrete, and when I looked underneath the rear end I saw that there was some oil on the differential, enough to notice it but not "dripping", which I wouldn't expect from the minimal drips on the concrete. The owner mentioned that one of the seals was leaking a little bit, his mechanic had noticed it the last time he had it in the shop, but he hadn't fixed it because it required some extensive shop work to get to it.
Would the seal failure be cause to suspect the motor? Or, could something mundane like a crankcase vent valve being plugged blowthe seal? I used to have a Jeep Cherokee 4-banger that ran moderately decently, but had some blow-by and kept blowing the front main seal - it ran acceptably well and I wouldn't consider it's motor to be blown. I'm considering picking up the car this Saturday, but hoping to develop a little confidence that I'm not buying a blown motor.
This is my first 7 that I own, though I dated a girl a long time ago that owned an early 1st gen. I'm really excited to finally get one of my own, and would rather not get burned on my first one. Any help before Saturday morning would be appreciated. Thanks guys.
