Oil exit lines

Right then, I've done a search already but it didn't tell me what I wanted to know.

I'm going to convert my 85 12A into a dry-sump system, and i need to know where the oil "exits" from the engine into the sump.

I'm going to run a line going to the oil pickup from the resevoir, i'm then going to run lines from then oil exits to seperate scavange pumps back to the resevoir. I'm then going to make a base-plate which will be fitted in place of the sump to give back some rigidity.

Good idea or not?

Well it's one of 2 places, front cover or rear housing, I'd guess the fitting in the front cover.

errr - didn't think of that!!

But I was wondering if there was any drainage from the housings themselves? Or is it all linked in series?

Yes there is drainage from the housings... main drainage is down the center housing, there is also oil splashing out around the front and rear main bearings.

Are you planning on using the factory oil pump as the scavenge pump? (I always thought that'd be a neat idea, myself )

I'm trying to keep the OE oil pump, so that will still be doing exactly the same job, I'll just be using some electric pumps for the scavenge pumps.

So far I've got the following worked out:

#Oil cooler line fed into main resevoir
#oil-pickup line piped into resevoir
#front and rear bearings seperately sealed and piped
#central housing piped
#sump replaced by metal sheet
#all oil lines from the engine will have independant scavenge pumps

I'm just looking at a way of getting rid of the sump really, so it won't need excessive oil pressure - it's going into a beetle which will be used on the street (at weekends). I'm also going to PP it, street port the secondaries, and it'll be using 5 HIF38 carbs
#primaries share one carb
#secondaries each have their own carb (vac operated)
#PP each have their own carb (remote vac operated)
I've also modified the OMP to run a resevoir, and the catch-can will automatically empty into the dry-sump resevoir

Quite a bit of work to do eh?

The only bit i'm going to have trouble doing are the vac operated scondaries - I've yet to find away to make them open when the manifold has high vacuum (=High RPM) I've taken the diaphragm off my Nikki carb, But that doesn't look anywhere near gutsy enough to open a carb butterfly
