Question no compression

i just got an 86 rx 7 and i was told that the front rotor has 90 psi compression and the rear has only 8 psi or something, should i try to rebuild it or just put another motor in it?? i really dont know alot about rotary motors but i want to do it myself?? n e suggestions??

the only way to find out which option is better is too tear the engine down and find out why the compression is low then see how much money it's gonna cost on repairs vs. new engine.

thanks, ill prolly just try to rebuild it or see what happens. might as well learn more about rotarys sonner than later

Go to www.atkinsrotary.com They have a video of a complete engine tear down, and they sell the seal and gasket kit. Its going to be like turborotaypower said. Once you tear it down, you have to measure the different parts and inspect everything to see what is good and what is not. it may be cheaper to rebuild, or it may be cheaper to replace the whole thing. A good book to have is the Haynes manual, available at most autoparts stores. If they don't have that specific manual, they can order it. To get a look at some of the inside parts, go to www.howstuffworks.com and do a search on rotary engines. It has video of how the engine works. Much simpler than a piston engine if you are at all familiar with those.

So, get the book, and read about engine removal, teardown and rebuild to see what tools you need, get the video to actually see it done, and then decide. The only reason why I would see that you may not want to tear down the engine is that if you get a new one, you will get your core charge back if you turn in a stock motor that has not be opened up. Its not difficult to rebuild though.
